I am conservative about cutting split ends. You see, hairs have natural tapers, cuticles, on the end, and a split end results if it goes away. That hair is dead to me.
I am told that hair falls out after 1000 days anyway... so is that how long we have to grow it? Basically, however long it gets in three years of no cutting is our full potential, almost. Generally, since we start off as hair-cutters, we probably won't realize what it actually is for 6.
Now, since the hair is dead to me, I guess it doesn't matter if you trim it, to remove the split end. People say that the split travels... but who cares how high it travels? It will fall out after it reaches day 1000 approximately. So why not let it split?
I think if we just stopped cutting our hair, and stopped stripping it of it's oils, and kept it well brushed, possibly mixing in some oils with it, it'd be fine without cutting or washing... save perhaps cold water to simulate rain with natural drying.
My one flaw is that when I do get extensively wet I do squeeze my hair (careful not to pull) before towelling it along the line. Not really bad in itself, it may tangle it more, or stress wet hairs.
Split ends can cause bad tangles and it can make your hair puffy and unkempt looking. I haven't gotten mine trimmed in over 6 months and the tangles are driving me insane.
That bit about the 1000 days can't be true or nobody wouls be able
to grow hair longer than 18" +/-. And there are people with hair
much longer than that.
There are differences of opinion within this group; but here are my thoughts...
I definitely prefer cutting off split ends, --- and believe me, I get plenty of 'em! But being the hair hog that I am, I cut off as little length as possible... just above where the split occurs, in other words.
This is what happens to me if i DON'T cut off split ends:
1) my hair looks like I need to see a dog groomer (funny I should say that... my new b/f IS a dog groomer!)!!
2) my hair catches & snags & breaks more when I run a comb through it;
3) it feels rough & dry to the touch;
4) it LOOKS rough & dry to the touch!
5) it is harder to manage, do anything with it, or make it look decent-looking enough to want to show it off in public (let alone wear it down).
Not everyone gets split ends, BTW. I was over at Bill C.'s house once when Absalom showed up, and both of those guys had very few splits. Mine has lessened since the use of beneficial oil on the lower half of my hair started a few years ago; but i still do get them. Nowadays, I try to do the "seach & destroy" method of chasing after individual offenders; but I also just recently trimmed off about an inch all over, because in my opinion, it needed it. I can't begin to tell you what a difference it can make afterward, --- the hair just looks & feels smoother, more vibrant & healthy, and far far easier to work with!!!
...But, hey, suit yourself!

I have never heard of the thousand day thing...it could well be another one of those myths people say (i.e cutting makes hair grow faster). I seriously don't believe in that or else people wouldn't grow to their waist or longer, or even to midback. Besides, alot has to do with how you maintain your hair, if you don't look after it, it may fall after a years growth, but if you take very good care of it, it may just grow for 6+ years. Hey im not an expert at this, but im sure if you do some research about hair you will see otherwise.

1000 days (3 years) is how long a hair grows on average.
For some people it might be 10 times that much, for some people it might be 1/2 as much
1000 days at average hair growth works out to about 18 inches. If you can grow hair to your butt (not everyone can) then you hair probably lives for 2,000 days (6 years).
People who can grow hair to the ground (fairly rare) have hair that lives for at least 4,000 days.
I'm pretty sure that my hair only grows for about 700 days, because it has stopped growing at about 13 inches.
Almost anyone i know can grow hair over 1,000 days....if it's less than i guess that's very bad luck then.
