Hello i have never grown my hair out but always have wanted to. The problem is my hair is very poofy, lol for lack of better terminology. When i get out of the shower and when i dry my hair it poofs out and when it starts to get long it gets curly, not real curly but kinda. How do i go about making to where i can grow it long? I use cheap shampoo and no conditioner because i ususally keep my hair spikey. I also use Spikerz hair glue. Any suggestions on what kind of shampoo i should use? I only want it to grow to about my shoulders. Thanks!
Jesse
Hi Jesse,
The first thing to know is: hair goes through stages as it grows out. There will be times when it really annoys and times when it seems to be just right. Bear this in mind. It's almost like a test to see if you can stick it out and go all the way. It's perhaps best not to fall into the trap of selectively cutting to fix a problem. Most problems tend to right themselves in time.
I'm seven months into my journey and my hair is in what we call the "awkward stage", or at least one of the stages. If you really want to grow it long, patience, perseverance and good hair care habits are essential. If you look in the Links section of this website you'll find some answers to how to care for your hair. Most people here will tell you to wash your hair about twice a week or so, but it depends on how much oil you produce. You'll have to discover these things for yourself. Most guys also swear by plenty of conditioner every time you wash it.
Good luck!

Well first off, stop spiking your hair. I bet you sleep with it like that, your can be damaged while you sleep. The hair gets really dry and vulnerable.
And second, read the FAQ on how to be a longhair. All of them are real good. Good luck.
The best and fastest way to Long Hair is to simply let the hair grow by itself and avoid any trims along the way. You have to put-up with the things it does along the way to becoming long before gravity kicks-in and the hair rather falls into place.
Some don't mind the stages (looks of the hair) as it grows-out. Something new every day. In fact, this very look at present seems to be a fad among the young these days. Others can cover it up by wearing a hat, using gel or perhaps even a Bandana.
Hey
Jesse
I use garnier fructis Shampoo & conditioner among a few others such Pantene prov or loreal as Cheap shampoo"s can lead to Dandruff but id go with Fructis Shampoo & Conditioner :-0 Cheap shampoo might be causing your to be Poofy too !

To start, read the long haired men's FAQ. It's REALLY informative. Also, I had poofy hair, and it's curly. To remedy the poof, you might try brushing your hair when it's wet, then letting it air dry. I know hair is more vulnerable to damage when wet, but at least doing this helps prevent poof. Next, what's wrong with curls? God gave you your hair, and it's special and unique. Don't be unsatisfied with it. Curly hair can look WAY cool when long. And as an added bonus, most girls I talk to say they like guys with curly hair more than guys with short hair.
Let it grow dude, it might be tough as you go through the awkward stage, but it will be worth it in the end.
I have nothing against long curly hair, i just wanted it to be straight is all ;) but now that i think about it I think i would prefer curly hair. You kinda look like heath ledger, hmmm good look i like it! Thats what i will go for
Well, the hair glue has to go, first off...it's doing nothing worthwhile for your hair. I can't tell you what shampoo or conditioner to buy because product performance varies greatly from head to head. However, what I CAN tell you is not to shampoo your hair too much, since shampooing strips your hair of its natural oils and thus makes it poofbally. :P You should try shampooing your hair every few days to once a week, and make sure you're conditioning your hair every other day or so and after shampoos.
Hairbrushes enjoy poofing out the hair further, so try going with combs or even just your fingers instead, which are what I use. Combing your hair very gently when it's wet and conditioned will really help reduce tangles and poofiness overall.
And as drumdude said, girls do show great interest to guys with curls. I can confirm this from experience. :P Many girls enjoy pulling on curls to see them bounce back up. Fun stuff.
Hang in there, man. It'll take some time, but you'll reach your goal eventually.
The only problem i have with this is that i work outside in a very dirty job, i haft to wash my hair everyday or else it gets all nasty. How do i overcome this? Thanks!
