It will never get long if you keep having "maintenance cuts".
If you feel you must gel.. you can still gel the front of it to get it outof your face. I did that until my hair was down to my nose. Its not too damaging if you use a decent gel/putty.
It will look a mess until you get some real length on it.
Long hair is for everyone.
keep growing and stop the "maintenance cuts"
Don't give up and stop getting "maintenance cuts". These will only slow down hair growth, contrary to popular rumors spread by hair stylists, getting trims will not make hair grow faster. Your hair will look messy for a while, but after a year and a half or so, when it's long, it will look great.
Also, I'm glad to hear you stopped straightening. Your hair will be a lot healthier because of it.
How were you straightening your hair before? Were you using chemicals or a flat iron? I use a flat iron on my hair or at least sections that tend to curl everday. The key is to keep moisture in your hair and use protective spray or silkening gloss. I use Kenra moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as well as their silkening gloss. I also have a heat protection spray I can use. My hair has never been healthier. You could also use a type of styling product such as Raha separator wax, it is pretty good.
Just don't cut your hair.
And yes, it does look a tad messy, I simply comb it but I'm sure you've tried that. But still, like everybody's saying; don't cut your hair. Once it will get longer it will "take care of it self" to some extent.
Long hair is truly for everyone. Mine is now down to the middle of my back. People ask how I got it so long. It's easy...keep idiots with scissors away from it. Just let it grow, the "awkward" stage is more in your mind than in your hair. Use a touch of brylcreem to hold it down. It isn't super heavy and it helps it shine.
Hey, Leigh:
The good news is that medium-long and messy is a hip enough look right now that you can probably get away with it. While you might view it as the awkward stage, the rest of the world will probably buy it as a conscious choice!
I used to get mine cut every three months, too, thinking it would shape it up. The result was that it always looked more bulky than long. Wasn't until I was able to get to five months between cuts that it looked long, was visible behind the ears no matter how I was photographed, and started to really take on some weight.
If the problem is the bangs curling up, my solution was to slick it back in the morning, then flip it forward by hand after no more than 30 minutes (after 10-15 will get you a little curl). Leaves you with long, straight hair in front that you can comb however you want.
