What do you guys think of using diluted vinegar for itchy scalp? My scalp has been itching annoyingly and I'm thinking it's probably really not good for my hair. Would vinegar leave an annoying smell for a long time or some crap? And does it even work?
If i have a scalp probelm i use a scalp normalising shampoo.
this one infact: http://www.vitacost.com/JasonShampooTeaTreeOil
Hi one011,
the idea of restoring the acidic pH on your scalp, e.g. after shampooing, is logical, but I'd prefer lemon juice over vinegar because it smells less intensively. It should take care of an itchy scalp just like vinegar. Try leaving it on your scalp for a few minutes before washing it out.
You can use a conditioner after washing out the lemon juice.
Best wishes, and happy growth!

So lemon works without damaging your hair?
Do you just put it in after your shampoo and before the conditioner? And keep it in for about one minute?
What you want is apple cider vinegar. It smells rather strong when you open the bottle, but if you wash it out of your hair thoroughly, the smell won't much, if at all. I can tell you this from personal experience.
The "normalising" shampoos suggested work under the same principal as the vinegar. I believe their more common name is "clarifiers" or "clarifying shampoos/conditioners." Their only difference is that they remove silicones, whereas vinegar alone won't. So the shampoos are stronger overall, but the vinegar is a more natural alternative. I'd go with trying out the cider vinegar first, and then checking out a clarifier if the problem persists.
Use them as you would any other shampoo, in case you were wondering.
HTH.
Peace
I also can recommend this from personal experience. :)
Vinegar is traditionally very good for fine hair, it makes it shine however its also an acid so if you use it use it well diluted in water (I mean use a spoonful per basin full), i've never heard of it used for an itchy scalp but i dont know everything! lol
You can use white vinegar as well.
You don't need to dilute it (if that seems complicated), just dump some on your hair in the shower (keep your eyes closed) and after you rinse it out it doesn't hardly smell at all (not enough for others to smell it). Follow up with conditioner.
If your hair has been around awhile then try it, you'll like it.
Not diluting it will probably help with the scalp itch too which is probably from bacteria growth. If you sweat a lot or work/play in dirty environments (smokey bars too) then wash your hair often to keep your scalp clean.

Does my hair have to have been around for quite a while? How long would you consider to be a while?
Well, if your hair has not had a chance to get long yet (past shoulders) then you probably won't be able to tell much difference.
The vinegar makes the "flakey" looking parts on the hair shaft lay down. Damage to the hairs comes with time and length.
Now for the itchyness length doesn't matter.
