Hello Folks:
Quick question for you all
I have a need to get my neck hairs trimmed or shaved off. I am at 14 months of growth and I tie my hair back when I go to work. Seems I have a lot of nappy hairs at the base of my neck, where the hairline ends and the neckline begins (you guys know what I mean), that are quite pronounced when the hair is tied back. These hairs dont really seem to be growing. Anyhow, I want to get these removed though Im not sure how to go about doing it. I dont trust myself or my wife with my electric razor back there (too close to my real head hair). Should I go to a salon just for this? Im not getting a hair trim or anything, just need the neck ones shaved.
Thanks in advance for the input.
Hey,
I shaved my neck hair several months ago, and decided that I would never do it again after that. It was terriby uncomfortable and itchy after it was done. Then when it starts to grow back in it is worse feeling. I have a werewolf-like neck hair situation similar to what you describe, however, what ever amount of perceived 'neatness' that the neck hair's removal might augment, to me it is not worth it. Shirt collars rub against the bare neck, and it seemed that when it got sweaty, that longer scalp hairs would stick to it and catch and even snap.
However, any hair salon would be glad to do it for a modest fee I'm sure. It just depends on what you want to do.
If you want to do it yourself, just get all your hair and get it up out of the way with a clip or a headband or something, then get a hand mirror in one hand, and sit up on the sink or counter or whatever you have with your back to your big mirror and carefully either shave or buzz the neck hair off with the clippers with the other hand. Just stop right below where the regular hair starts and you should be fine. Hope that helps.
Thanks for all the input on this issue. I appreciate it. I decided last evening to give it a go myself. I used 2 mirrors and my beard trimmer. I went ahead and removed the nappy hairs from just the side areas of the neck. The hairs in the very back area I left untouched. These ones are always covered by the hair loose or in a tail, so I didn't see any need to remove them. I like the smooth/neat feeling on the sides of my neck now. I think it looks more professional with these renegade hairs.
After reading Bragis post about having his long hair at work, Ive been hypersensitive about being as neat as I possibly can with my hair. It can be hard to be the only long haired man in the office.
Hi. I know what you're talking about. Sometimes I put my hair in a tail and wear a hat (this is when I'm doing in hard labor and want my hair completely out of my way so I can work) and my coarse ugly short neck hair sticks out like a sore thumb. I think it looks much neater to have it trimmed about ever 2-4 weeks. I own a pair of clippers to keep my beard neat and I simply asked a friend if they would clip the neck hair off for me. I tried myself once but couldnt do it because I couldnt see and I didnt want to cut any of my actual hair off. Make sure the other person knows what their doing though! Two heads are only better than one when their both smart! Haha. The only reason I suggest to trim these is because they only grow out to be about an inch or less and will not go into a ponytail. If you are in a business like situation it looks sort of ratty and a boss or co-worked may give you some trouble about it and use it as an excuse to say long hair is bad. And of course we know that's not true. You can keep long hair neat and clean just like short hair, it simply requires more effot. Anyway, good luck with your growing and best wishes. Peace ^.^
If I were you I would take the Salon route. Probably won't take but 3 mins and not cost that much either, and it will be done without losing the hairs that count.
He doesn't understand how much it "irks" me to do it. If he'd just let it go, it'd get into a ponytail once it gets long enough, but he just won't let it grow.
Therefore, I have to shave it.
One day I'll get "a wild hair up my butt" and ...
Let the razor slip and give him a reverse mohawk...
hehehe
Not all neckhair grows long. The neck hair below the natural
hair line usually just grows into an unsightly mass.
Maybe follow Bragi's advice and do it yourself. Although if you go down this route, I would reccomend that you use a pair of scissors, as using them gives you more control as well as an extra level of safety compared to buzzing. Also, these hairs have a very short terminal length and should present no problems to a pair of proper* scissors.
Personally, I have very soft neck hairs and I often play with them while I'm reading, studying etc.
* You should probably invest in a salon-quality pair of scissors. Whatever you do, don't use your nail-scissors etc!
