Hey all, i read the boards alot i dont think ive ever posted though, but i really need advice now.
I know im only 15, but im scared my hair is thinning, when my hair is wet their are fairly noticable streaks of my scalp visible, and when i dry my hair they are still visible unless i really poof my hair out which makes it look really frizzy and wild. My hair is really curly so id imagine the curls would kinda cover those up naturally, but it seems like my hair is thinner than it should be, you can pretty much see through a curl. My dad says i should go see a professional at a hair salon, but im kind of shy to just walk in and tell them i think im thinning. Is this somthing i should be embarrassed to seek help for? Should i go to a womens hair salon to have them check it out? *id go to a mens hair salon but their are none nearby* And should i really worry about my hair thinning? Ive been going through a lot of stress for the past year so i wouldnt be surprised if that were the case...any advice would be appreciated.
No, don't go to a salon, a salon is a place to get hair cut and styled, not for expert advice and diagnosis on your scalp condition .ie thinning. Why don't your try to minimise stress, eat healthy and get lots of rest. Then, if after you do these things, nothing has improved, then go see a dermetoligist. Good luck.
Ok thanks, figured the salon wouldnt be the best choice, to sectari's post i dont think my family has ever had thinning problems at a young age so hopefully its just falling down like you said. Ill ask my dad if i should get an appointment for the dermetoligist, though it would probably have to be after my cardiology appointment. thanks alot for your advice guys =)
My hair, which is also curly, seemed to get thinner when I started growing it out, but after a while it became obvious that it was really the effect of the hair falling down and away from the scalp rather than it staying up in the same place and making a thicker covering. if you're lucky, that's you too.
What is the follicular history of your male relatives? If there's a history of any of them losing their hair at very young ages that's cause to worry, but if not, you're probably OK.

Well, your assumption that the curls will cover your scalp is wrong - an s-shaped curl going down the head will have numerous semicircular holes on the side, giving it a sorta scalloped look - these holes will let scalp show through. Ideally, another curl will be next to it and its own turns will fill in the other's gaps, and so forth, but ever so often, a few curls don't get other curls near enough to them to cover up the scalp, and voila - apparent thinness. So, I don't think your hair is really thinning - it's probably just the curl pattern you have going. I get those little scalp spots from time to time, but I just fix the curls with my hands and they're more or less fine afterwards.
If you can get a free or inexpensive dermatologist appointment, you should go anyway, though, just to make sure there's nothing actually going on with your hair count.
yea i was thinking about that, it seems to make more sense i guess, it gets a lil stressful though from time to time cuz ill be moving some hair to cover a spot, then another forms at the spot i moved the hair and its like X(, im still gonna go see a dermatologist asap, if things check out good ill look into any ways i could style my hair that would cover that
thanks alot for responding btw, your hair out of all the pics i seen looks the most similar to mine cept yours is longer =D
