My hair has been longish (with maintenance cuts) for much of the last five years. Have finally gotten the right length between cuts where it looks good, without looking straggly. Still would be considered "awkward stage" by many here, but works for me and I'm not working toward the ponytail.
Longer has been a good look for me. Really reimaged me in the eyes of some people.
But it's been five years. And it's summer. And I'm thinking of changing up again. But it would still need to be something different and interesting.
For many people here, I realize, this question is entirely in the realm of the hypothetical. May be that way for me, too. But...
If you were going to do something other than continue growing your hair in to a ponytail, what would it be?
Second choice for me (if I had to choose) would be the style Punky Meadows had in the early 80's.
But for now I aspire the most for Absalom or EdG length hair if possible.
Great flick, to, but the ending sucked.
If my understanding of your question is correct, you are wondering what sort of MEDIUM-length style would I be OK with...
Here's my answer:
If I ever decide to have my hair shortER, I'd probably go back to when my hair was only to about shoulder blade length, --- at the very shortest, back to "shoulder " length itself. I didn't have to tie it back then all the time, like I do now (I live in a very windy city).

Perhaps one of those asymetrical type styles from way back.
Other than the pony tail style, I would just let it loose, or half-tail! Man, this is making me a little excited. (I just shaved my head like a month ago and I am recovering.) Those two styles are just so sick.
LONGHAIR>SHORTHAIR
FOREVER.
What?!
Did I miss something?
Did you get your head shaved?
Did you post about it?
How long was your hair before the shave?
Sorry to overreact, but this took me by surprise.
P.S. I wish you all the best with regrowing it, if you have shaved it :-)
Mohawk (A real one, with shaved sides. Not what they call a mohawk nowadays).
Or maybe dreadlocks again.
But I think that I'll just continue growing my hair.

...at the minimum?!
robert smith??
He was one of the main inspirations when I grew my hair out the first time in 2001.
Of course I don't view his hair as long now (as I did at that time) and I am 1000 times more aware of the damage that hair gel, hair spray and other such gunk does to ones hair...that said I still love the power of having all of one's hair 'out there' so to speak...almost like a hyped up version of Morrissey.
I remember once taking a can of hairspray to school when I was 17 after my hair had been allowed to grow for-wow!-around a year (mid-2001), turning my head upside down and spraying it. Suffice to say, I got a few curious looks at school that day!
I also want to state for the record that I am a longhair at heart, and that that is want I want to achieve and maintain. In the future however,if I was to go short again for a bit, well, then it these styles that I would probably try.
Including perhaps the hair of Robert Smith, of The Cure, one of the greatest, most enduring and influential bands/artists of the past 3 (and a bit) decades.
I now have no second choice. It is only going to be long for me from now on.
This will probably be a unique answer for the board... Even though I will most likely never give up my long hair... If I had to choose a style other than long hair... it would be a bald head haha. When I first decided to grow it out it was either to go bald or to let it grow out.. I think I made the right decision... it fits my personality better.
Wow this is easy
First choice long hair second choice long hair and forever long hair oh well nice try with your post im longhaired commented
Take care
Axel
Ps No second choices for me
My second choice, other than being a proud long hair, would be a mohawk!!!
