Hey there. I've got long hair, few inches past my shoulders, and it's all grown out to aproximately the same length. At this point, I'm getting tired of the way it lays so thick and it all sits out a few inches away from my neck and shoulders. I also have really thick hair and live in s=Seattle where the humidity makes it worse I think. SO, I'm thinking of having my roommate undercut it in the back 2 or 3 inches. Do you think it's necessary to have the undercut done in layers somehow, ie: go to Supercuts or whatever, or if my roomie just uses my clippers to go up 3" or so along the back will that be cool? I don't care if it's perfectly clipped since it's underneath anyway. I am trying to get my hair to lay flatter. That's the goal - less poof. Any suggestions or ideas?
PS. I had un undercut when I had really long hair in school. It was undercut really high because my mom did the cut and everytime she did it she went just a liiiiitle bit higher. Eventually, I was bummed about how my pony tail didn't really anchor to the back of my head because the undercut was os high so I cut my hair off. I won't be cutting it that high if I do it today. Also, I don't usually wear it in a pony tail, I just want it to lay flat, nice and close to my neck and shoulders. Thanks!
Hi,
if I read you correctly, you kind-of don't really want an undercut for its own sake, as you have gotten "burned" by your mon in the past.
An undercut may not help, as it would make your hair appear less thick, but the outer layers would still look "poofy". What probably does the trick much better is to have the inner hair layers (the hairs originating further down in the neck) trimmed a tiny bit shorter (less than 1/2") than the outer layers, and to use a good conditioner on the lengths. If you want to get it trimmed that way, please make sure you have it done at a place where you have gotten positive references from other male long-hairs, or by someone whom you really can trust.
If Bill advises against eg "Supercuts", I'd take that VERY seriously.
Good luck!

An Undercut if done really well is quite stunning to say the least. But if you are going for this look merely to escape the "poof" then that says to me you really don't want one. If I am incorrect, PLEASE go to a high quality Salon and visit several Salons telling them exactly what you desire. Never mind this "friend" or "Mother" bit. To save-money can ruin a look that can really be pulled-off well.........but it has to be done right.
Best advice I think is if you cannot stand humid weather is to put all in a Ponytail.
I've had an undercut for about 4 years and if you decide to go
that route my best advise is to start with a small undercut.
You can always cut higher later but its real difficult to lower
an undercut. Find a good trustworthy haircutter. And DON'T LET
MAMA ANYWHERES NEAR YOUR HAIR!!!
Thanks for the advice guys. I decided not to do the undercut. It's kinda rediculous but I just bought a brush the day I posted my original message. I've been using a cheap comb or my fingers all this time - not cuttin it for my thick hair. Ialso did something aq bit radical that I'll post about in a new thread. Thanks again to all who replied.
