One of my best mates has long hair. It is shoulder length, straight, and orange colour. The only problem is that his hair is very thin and fine. When i say 'thin' i don't mean that you can see his scalp or anything, just that the hair strands are very fine and soft feeling.
Straight red hair is often known to be quite thin.
When he ties a ponytail the diametre is very small.
Another sure sign is when i touch his hair it is so light and doesn't carry much weight. I call his hair 'fairy floss', lol.
When i touch my hair it is so thick and carries weight. His is like touching thin air almost, lol.
He does smoke and drink(yeah, bad bad etc etc) but i think it is more of a genetical factor more than anything. I feel sorry for him because he really wants to grow his hair longer and it suits his personality entirely, being a stoner rock guitarist musician.
I think his mother has the same hair to him but she wears it short styled. Although his sister has very nice hair and it seems to look quite thick.
Do you think that with such fine hair , his terminal length will be short?
Bounded by his genes and natural hair type, is there anything he could do to make his hair thicker?
Anyone else with very fine/thin hair that could share any thoughts or words of advice?
Thankyou guys.
Although I dont have thin hair myself, I would not think it would have an effect whatsoever on terminal length, maybee the rate of breakage would be greater, but if he maintains it well than it shouldnt be a problem.
Now the problem with the thickness... What Id recommend is him going to one of those high dollar hair shampoo/conditioner places, I think ive seen a couple ones before to help add thickness.. Ive used the expensive ones for flattening and seemed to work well.
Thats just my two cents,
Hope it helps 80s..
Matt
Hi Jean hope all is well with you.Anyway what you described is alot like the way my hair is.My hair tends to be very fine especially when its very dry and when I put it in a pony the diameter is quite small in my opinion. It I were to grab it as if to tail it and toss it in the air it does have a very light feeling to it.I think the only reason it has the weight it does is the fact that my hair is at waist length so there is much more of it than most people might have.Anyway as you can see from my avatar even thought I have very fine hair I still was able to grow it to its current length. So I would think your friend should be able to do the same as long as he avoids trimming it too much.I do wish my hair was thicker and heavier but I just live with what I have and am grateful to have a full head of hair at my age.So tell you friend not to worry so much about it and let it grow out.Hope it works out for him as he sounds like he'd make a great longhair.Mark
Thanks for your advice Mark. Since you have thin hair you make a good example for this. The very fact that you can still grow your hair to waist length shows that it is possible.
yes, indeed, you have amazing hair Mark and a full hairline, and it takes years off your appearance. Be happy with what you have :)
My friend needs to stop trimming so much. I will tell him to just let his hair grow naturally, no trims, take good care of it and live with his fine hair type. ATM, he feels like his hair won't grow longer but i will tell him not to worry and that there are guys twice his age with fine hair and it is down to their waist.Thanks.
if his hair is ever to become stronger and thicker he has to take in more protein. if he keeps it up for about 2 months he'll notice an improvement in the new growth:
eat 2 eggs at least twice every week
drink soymilk in place of whole/skim milk
some other sources of protein:
poultry
saltwater fish
cheese
tofu
or he can take omega 3 and coral calcium if he doesn't like any of the above mentioned sources
Good advice. I never thought about dietry intake having much influence on his hair thickness, it totally never passed my mind.
I will tell him to start eating more protien based foods, as you mentioned, eggs, meat, chicken, fish, and maybe supplements such as Omega 3.
I know that he does eat meat regulary but he tends to skip meals, drink too much alcohol etc. He is very skinny.
If he considers my advice seriously, and starts eating up, i will get back with some results in a few months. Obviously, as you said, it will just be the new growth at the roots that might be noticeable.
This all makes sense though. Hair is made of protien, therefore one needs to consume an adequate amount of protien products to grow healthy, strong, thick hair. Thanks man.
glad i could help =)
by the way, if he starts taking coral calcium his appetite will probably change too so that he'll want to eat more healthily. but he should take it in the morning or during the day bc it gives you energy. everybody i know who takes it has noticeda vast improvement in their overall health. so it should definitely help his health and appetite improve =)
also he should probably wash his hair every once in a while with a shampoo with lots of protein like Finesse Plus. it should add some level of strength to the old growth
That sounds like my hair. It does tangle and break easily, which obviously have an effect on apparent growth, but mine was 35 inches when last measured by the method where you start at the hairline at the front and take the tape measure over the top of the head.
I think that henna strengthens it and volumising conditioner makes it look thicker. Even combing your hair upside down makes the volume look more, which is a very old trick.
