I look like the rest of my family with the exception of my hair. Everybody in my family has straight wavy or bone straight hair. I have extremely thick curly hair. That is exactly the same texture as former lead guitarist Slash of Guns and Roses. I have worn my hair long most of my life. I have questions about my type of hair.
1. Is there anything that could make it grow faster?
2. Is there any straightners that actually work on this type of hair?
When I was a teen I did not care and just let my hair hang wild like Slash of G&R. Now I'm 30 years old and work professional jobs. I have to spend time and money to get my hair to lay down and pull it all back in a tight ponytail to maintain somewhat of a professional image. I always spend lots of money on straightners at salons that never work. They fade after about 2 days. I just wish to wear my hair down without looking like a caveman.
Is there anyone else out there with this type of hair that could offer some advice or input?
Hello,
I'm in a similar situation. I am the only curly haired in my family. I have inherited this from my ethnic genes, maybe generations earlier. My grandma had curly hair but she wore it short most of her life so i can only assume.
Slash is one of my curly haired inspirations. His hair is perfect example of beautiful, natural curls.
In a word, no. A good diet and lifestyle is encouraged for healthy hair growth. Eat lots of protien, exercise, get rest, chill out. Living life will grow your hair. Just gotta let time do the rest :)
I rarely straighten my hair. I use my sister's ceramic hair straighter and it does the job. Of course, as soon as water or any other form of moisture touches my hair, it looses the straightness. You gotta keep doing it every few days, and that is a nasty cycle of split ends and damaged hair, AVOID!
I would be inclined to straighten hair once a month, at the very most. Better even, just don't do it.
Moderation is the key here.
You don't have to look like a "caveman", lol. Curly hair can be neat too. You have this wierd attitude that straight hair is neat and curly hair is wild and crazy and unkempt. Why don't you look at curly females to get some ideas. A slicked ponytail should suffice, maybe some brading perhaps. As long as it looks neat you can keep the curls and not worry about getting flack off the boss etc. I would pack up the straightener if i was you, it is just going to cause damage to your hair in the long run.
Hey hello there. Thanks for writing me. It's nice to know someone else can feel what I'm saying. I have unique mix. All East Indian on my mother's side. Definitely no curls there.
However my dad had some strong roots from Eastern Europe (Hungary and Urkraine to be exact). Him being adopted I have no idea what anyone else on his family looks like. Everyone says I look exactly like him except the hair. His was straight wavy. I swear he must have been part Jewish. Hence my "Jewfro" type hair.
I believe you are right though. I think these straightners have slowed down my growth. I'm gonna kick the habit and just wear my hair down when I feel the need. Anyone has a problem with it. Oh well! Thanks for the encouragement.
