I'm 31 now, and I've had long hair since I was about 16 or so. I just cut it short in February (I'm still reaching back to fix the phantom of my ponytail.) I don't exactly hate it, but I don't like it much either -
- Not to get off the subject, but the only reason I cut it was for a job interview, a really good one, the type of thing I've crossed my fingers to find for years. I went in there with my short, professional hair cut, and, to my dismay, the guy who interviewed me had hair down to his waist! How do you like them apples? I CAN'T WIN!!! -
Anyway, I just measured the length of my hair, 3 months and 5 days since I cut it, at 2 1/4 inches longer than it was the day it was cut. That's 0.75 inches a month, and apparently, that's better than average. But I'm convinced I can do better than that. I believe there must be a way for me to get 1 inch per month.
What I want now, is to be able to get a short, professional looking hair cut, and turn that into some decent long hair in six months time, and maybe even get it into a ponytail.
I need advice on the best vitamins or dietary habits to maximize hair growth, and also different short haircuts that would be the easiest, fastest and best to grow back out.
Can anyone help me?
I'm no expert - there are more qualified guys on here - but for what its worth I've followed their advice and its working for me. The advice?
DON'T get it cut again!!!
And from what I've read there aren't any magic vitamins or special diets that will make it grow faster. All you need is patience. And its gonna take longer than a year before you can get it into a proper ponytail.
Good luck!

I'm going to take some of this "For Women, Hair, Skin and Nails" stuff, because I've heard that it works, get at least my RDA of protein, and I'll bet I can come up with a more-or-less proper ponytail by Halloween (not that I need it for a Halloween costume or anything, but that's my landmark).
I can't seem to upload a picture of myself, but I'll try again later. I want everybody to see what my hair looks like now, and come back with a Halloween update.
Ouch! That would have hurt. I bet you didn't see that one coming!
0.75 inch per month? say what?
That is a very, very fast growth rate. The average is .5" so you will have 18" of hair in 2 years, if you don't trim.
I'm jealous. Are you serious?
1 inch per month?
That would mean 24 inches of hair in 2 years. That is a dream, wouldn't we all want to have hair that grew at such a rapid rate?
Unfortunately, it is not possible, unless you are some super human being, which you are not, neither am i, for that matter.
Vitamins will no have miracle effect on your growth rate.
If you are already getting all your nutrients from food then it just makes for an expensive placebo.
I don't take anything specialized in hair though. I take Centrum so I am taking care of my hair and my general health. Centrum has numerous vitamins and minerals.
good luck.
I would say the things that make you a healthy individual are the best, lots of sleep, no stress, good diet, excercise, positive mental attitude.
You are still looking at .5 inch a month though, but it will be in better condition if you are.
Hi Jonny,
thanks so much for posting this experience, this is invaluable for all those who would ever considering a hair cut for a job interview.
To answer some questions:
I found the following things helpful:
- enough sleep
- enough healthy food (i.e. not too much either)
- making sure I feel good about myself
- and vitamins:
Try one tablet B-100 (i.e. 100 mg of B1, B2, B6, and niacin), 5-10 mg of biotin (don't combine with raw or undercooked eggs, that would inactivate biotin), 200 micrograms of iodide (but only if you do not have excess function of your thyroid gland), 5 mg of folic acid, 1000 micrograms or 1 mg of B-12, 40-60 mg of zinc, 500-1000 mg ov vitamin E, and ~500 mg ov vitamin C. Take this TWICE A WEEK, the doses I have given you are quite high. - AVOID Vitamin A and D supplements - spend a bit of time in the sun instead.
Well, we all learn from our mistakes; you'll be back in no time. Best wishes,
Hans-Uwe
You just never know when that could happen!

Thanks, this sounds like good advice. I'll look into some of these vitamins. I'm thinking about trying some of this "Hair, Skin, Nails" formula. I've heard that works.
If you're interested, I've found that eating Textured Vegetable Protein Chunks, or TVP chunks (it's a soy-based meat substitute, fortified with B vitamins) on a daily basis makes my hair grow much faster. You can use one part ground turkey to two parts re-hydrated TVP chunks, and put it in spaghetti sauce, and it's even better than hamburger. It saves me a lot of money too.
Time & Patience are the Best two things to bad you cut your hair, Please let me know if your hair does grow an inch a month as you will be entering into the guiness book of records !
Good luck with growing you hair back again
