Recently, I've been reading and posting on a forum dedicated to information about reptiles, and I noticed how poorly written about 99% of the forum's posts are. I guess I never really thought about it, but the majority of the active members of this forum are quite well spoken!! It is nice to be a member of a group where one can have an intelligent conversation with another without sentences like "hey im deciding to grow my hair out how do i do it i mean iv never grown it out thanx laterz". I know I'm guilty of poor grammar from time to time; I often get lazy :-). However, I think it's something special when the majority of users belonging to a message board conisitently use proper grammar and correct spelling. It's just something I noticed, and I thought I'd point it out. I don't want to name specific people because I might leave some out, but you all definitely know who you are :-). Anyway, good job with your spelling and grammar, and definitely keep it up!! :-)
Sorry for such a long off-topic post, I just wanted to point this out :-)
When I said "this forum," I meant THIS forum, not said reptile forum. Just wanted to make sure that wasn't confusing :-).
That is a very good observation, Wes.
I have been impressed with the number of members who do not have English as their native language writing excellent posts.
Kudos to all !!

Now, now Weston. You can't end a sentence with :-) as punctuation.
Just messing with you, very true!
Weston (and all others), I'm more of a lurker here, and I, too, noticed the intelligence of the members here, but more importantly, the sincere caring, support and respect that the members have for one another. This is a real nice, friendly and intelligent community.
Thanks for sharing your observation.

I agree. Ive read countless forums with bad grammar and poor spelling coupled with hostility, bigotry, racism, inappropriate and excessive vulgarity and extreme digression from topic. This has been the first internet forum I've ever joined where I could feel comfortable expressing myself in a mature way, WITHOUT FEELING RIDICULED.
I definitely think thats because all of us here on this forum pride ourselves on being a community of forum users/posters who are in support of each other towards a common goal. Definitely a plus in my book :)
OMGWTFBBQLOLZOR!!!!!!!1111oneone

That post was a real workout for the brain :-x Hahah, and it was definitely funny :-)
...and i still managed to find many spelling and grammatical errors in your post, Weston.
"consistently" not "conisitenly".
I do believe Fallen Angels and Bragi both have very high levels of language and English reading/writing skills.
Some of the words they use make me flee to my dictionary, lol, just to find out what they actually mean. I make numerous typos myself, i have to confess. Fortunately, proof reading has reduced this amount of typing errors i make.
Sometimes i struggle to find a word or adjective to describe something. I use the word "awesome" much too frequently, very jueveile. My spelling and language skills aren't great, they are just average for a native English speaker.
I think it is great to analyse our English skills limititations. It's not about what i know, it's about what i don't know and still have so much to learn still.
Oh, and doesn't it annoy you when i forget to paragraph my sentences. It becomes one big long essay without structure or break-up. I'm terrible sometimes.
As for the internet boards with juevenile kids who spell like they are sending text messages on their cell phones. I luv u babe, dat is so cool man, dis is 4 u so u can be wit...
Ahhh, MAKE IT STOP ALREADY!!! horrible. Thats the sad new generation of kids in society. They have air inside their heads(not a brain), watch Big Brother, text message crap on their phones constantly, watch MTV...ok i had my rant now.
Well, that is my observation of most 12-16 year old kids around here where i live.
Oops, my mistake! Nobody is perfect :-), and I most definitely know my spelling isn't perfect all the time!
Wow, thanks, 80's Metal. That is quite a compliment. I think F/A is an English major, so to be placed in the league with his language skills is quite some praise. Good grammar, diction and usage is quintessential to effective communication. It does take work to acquire; years of writing, reading, and studying help it come more easily. If I do use a rarely seen word, well it is not for being pavonine (hehehe). It is because in order to express your thoughts in the best way possible, one must use the best word choices since words are the only way that we have to transfer ideas between people.
This board does have lots of good English skills displayed, and is easier to read than lots I've seen elsewhere.
Hehe, thanks! :) And yes, I AM an English major, although I see Bragi's grasp of language as superior to mine, particularly with his great knowledge of Latin roots and phrases in other languages. I've always admired that in his posts, particularly to Joao David.
And I've noticed the good English on this board too. It's much like the longhaired community, which is almost like our sister site (literally, lol). There are a couple one-post wonders and few-post wonders that type in ways that make texting look like an SJ Perelman story, but those are thankfully rare. :P And I don't mind the bad typing, really...to me, what's most important is that a message gets across relatively painlessly. I just wonder if we need to simplify our replies for some of these people.
Keep writing good!:P
"keep writing well!"
*devilish grin* :P
...but what ever happened to your capitalization of keep lol, I am so back in English class. *shudders* Scary stuff...
Weston, I noticed it too. The people on this board actually know proper English! I tend to be very anal about correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, etc., and I cringe whenever I notice a mistake I've made after I've already hit the [SEND] button. I guess you could say that bad usage of language is one of my pet peeves.
My other pet peeve is bad driving. Now that's way off-topic!
Cheers,
dino
Well, thank you. Now I feel obligated to check my grammar and spelling everytime I make a post. hahah.
I fully agree allthough my grammer is far from perfect. Many swedes replaces simply the swedish words out to the english words because it feels most natural to speak that way. I hold with about that most all here seem very serios with to give inteligent, wellthoughtthru answeres and have lots experience from the real life and stories to tell. It is also fun that the agegroup here is so wide.
"The bottom is nådd"
Some messages posted here are still agonising to read. This includes some regular users (not mentioning any names), and of course the one post wonders.
Don't get me started on the many different ways "definitely" is spelt on this board!
That's because guys with long hair are, by definition, superior to "the masses" in every way, lol!
I find that this is truly one of the best things about this forum, in that people have exceptional english and language skills in general. Personally I have been guilty of using slang in things such as texts and such, but I always do my best to present my linguistic skills as well as possible when talking on this board as I don't want to come across as some illiterate noob.
Anyway that is my input.
Take care everyone!
