hey Redtail, im sorry to post off topic, but the system wouldent let me Email you for some reason.Im an infrequent poster on this board, and ive read some of you're posts and it seems to me your the guy to ask regarding guitars. I am currently thinking of buying a new axe in about august, im either going for a Gibson SG or a Flying V, after many months of narrowing my options down, this is what im left with, I play in a covers band called Sunbeam, we mainly play small gigs in Preston(England), we cover stuff by UFO, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, early heavy metal stuff. now I know either one of these guitars would suit the style of music I play, but in September, ill be off to university, so that will be the end effectively of my time in Sunbeam, so then ill be a bedroom shredder again, given these circumstances, can you recommend either the SG or the V to me? any help would be welcome, thanks in advance. James.

Well, Angus and Tony both use SGs, so there would be a certain validity in using one if you're covering AC/DC and Sabbath. On the other hand, I've always prefered the Vs and Explorers myself, out of all the Gibsons I've played they seem most suited to my perception of a heavy metal guitar.
That said, I'm an Ibanez junkie, not a Gibson guy. 8^)
In the end, I really can't say anything is inherently bad about either of the guitars you are considering. You will need to sit down with them both and spend some time playing them, preferably through your own amp & fx, and ultimately make that decision yourself. Either way you choose, I'm sure you will end up with a fine instrument.

Are you the same user that posts the Buzzboard to ?????
If you are asking, am I the mr.coffee that's been over there baiting or debating Curt and his associates today, yes. I've never been there before, and will not likely return, but it seemed like an interesting exercise in pointless flag-waving.

Haha lol Curt as version that us long hairs are very femine as we are girls due to our mane being long and lives in a Dream world and within that world all guys should be shaved bald with foam or gel he surely needs to wake up from that world & start living reality that some guys DO have longhair and enjoy having it long weither he likes it or not !
Yeah, it was interesting, in that as much as he fusses and harrasses, he never once raised a valid response to anything I said. It was like, 'So, Curt, this is unfounded because you've never met me, but here is a little bit about me and how I defy your definition.' 'Yeah, well you can look like a woman if you want to.'
It was actually a little bit exasperating, I would've loved to have seen a legitemate answer from him.

Its a real tradedy that people like that look on us as female lookalikes where as i have never had a problem with friends of my own who have short hair though there own choice some shaved to he will have to come to terms that every guy is different on what he like as it wouldnt do for every guy to like the same things it will NEVER happen ! He claims to wear his bald never come across anything to suggest his claim but im not real interested in guys that live in dreamland !

I dont know, I myself is a strat junkie... I played other guitars like teles and LP's (Les Paul) and teles feels too boxy, and LP's feels too heavy and doesnt really offer much in ways of customization. I like the strat's sexy contour for some reason, its like it was designed to be comfortable to play, plus it doesnt weight half a ton (like LP's). I dont know about other shape such as flying V's or whatever, I do know that flying V's are not too confortable since you have to strap it, no benchtop playing because the guitar would slide off your lap. I know Iron Maiden pretty much uses run of the mill stratocaster, and many other players like Hendrix, Yungwie, Clapton, SRV, and stuff all use strat. Theres a reason why its the most popular and copied guitar in the world.
Plus if you are into modding guitars strats are real good in that regard... switch pickguard, body, neck, pickup, whatever. its built like a computer, easy to build from the ground up, and easy to customize too.
Yeah, i tried a couple of strats, but the tone just wasnt what i was looking for, it sounded great clean, and the neck pickup had beautiful definition with a high gain lead sound, but it just wasnt the tone im looking for. A Tony Iommi signature would be fabulous, if i could afford it, as it is, i have to stick to standard production models. thanks very much for all your help guys.
you really have to ge tinto a store and try them both sg and v have a strange feel sg wants to fall on its neck and v the other way.......both have the fat humbucker tone.......but that iommi signature sg would fit well for your band.....its all about the feel and looks.
the flying v's sometimes come in a white korina version.......very light but still has an awosme sound
