Hi im currently in the phase of growing long hair were its not short but not long either. Simply put it dosent look good. Anyways im at a point right now were my hairs not long enough to comb back so its kind of "there". Right now my sideburns are starting to flare up/curl when it dries as well as the hair on the back of my head. I wear a hat at work alot and the my sideburn hair with curl up by my hat and it looks embarassing. I come from a family were all males have extremely short hair and i have no one to ask advice from. My mom dosent help much either because she thinks i should have short hair. Ill admit im ignorant to proper haircare and dont know too much about taking care of hit. Im also someone who has to put up with dandruff which i hate. Any tips would be greatly appreicated. I dont want to resort to cutting my hair due not being able to control it.
Hello and welcome!
For starters, I would suggest you click on "Links" at the top of the page and read the 4 part thesis written by Bill Choisser. It is really the "Bible" so to speak and a MUST to read.
It will answer just about everything you may have a question to.
My best to you in growing out your mane.
Gel usually helps to tame the stubborn parts of your hair. Or, if you have hair like mine, I use this anti-frizz stuff my mom has (some sort of fancy gel, I'm sure)
As for your dandruff, I'm not sure about that since I only had trouble with it when my hair was shaggy and now it's fairly long. I used dandruff shampoo myself but I've heard it's very strong and is damaging when used frequently, so ask some other members about that one. I didn't notice any damage from it though, and it definitely helped to get rid of the flaking.
Here's what you can do to control the flips, ducktails etc. (the ends that do a 90 deg. angle and stick out). Get a circular brush, it's the type that has a cylinder attached to a handle and on the cylinder are bristels sticking out, basically a bristle drum on a handle. after you wash, comb your hair down gently so it goes straight down as much as possible. On anything that wants to stick out, comb that with the brush, rotating it as you comb so your hair wraps around it and curls in. You have to go easy and not pull--if it wraps too tight and pulls stop and start over. If your hair is wet and you used conditioner it should comb pretty easy. let it air dry. This won't totally solve the problem but it will help get through this stage until gravity pulls everything down.

Is your hair currently layered? I currently have this same awkward stage problem. Mine is also neither short nor long. I have fine hair and it is currently layered, which I defeinitely think is part of my problem, but I think it's also just a matter of being patient while it gains more length. I want to have the layers gradually cut away in order to allow as much weight to it as I can get. I figure in about two months, I will have about a 1/2 inch cut off around the sides and back. I will still have some layers left and this might even keep me in an awkward stage longer than I would really like, but I figure if I have about a 1/2 inch taken off every couple of months, it shouldn't take too long to have it all at one thickness.
Thanks for the help. I had the curls cut off and it looks alot neater even though it is a tad bit shorter. I will definatley watch out on how i wash my hair now. I wasnt aware how damaging some shampoos can be. One last question. My friend who has very long hair and grows it very fast as well(almost twice that of mine)said i should try and take propecia or rogane(sp). Is that practical or just stupid. He said he used it and his hairs growth rate was increased greatly. Is this dumb or worth a try?
