I'm a huge baseball fan (S.F. Giants, baby!!), and I was just wondering how many of you other longhaired guys like baseball too. Also, remember how Johnny Damon, when he played for the Boston Red Sox, used to look like a caveman, as many described it? And then he had to shave his hair and beard all off when he was traded to the Yankees? That was very sad. Although I'm a Left Coast guy all the way and don't really care that much about the Yanks-BoSox rivalry, I'll take New York anyday over Boston. Still, of course, I much preferred Johnny's Boston look.
Here are before-and-after photos:
im from england so i dotn know much about baseball or its players but im diggin how he looked on the picture with his hair grown out and his beard.. its 'masculine'! just for people with concerns about long hair not being masculine on men =)
I totally agree with AJAy about the masculine thing.
I believe that the guy looks much more masculine in the first pic with long hair than he does with short hair. And it suits him better too.
Long hair is just more unique. I like it.
Bear in mind Damon did it becuase George Steinbrenner
insists on no long hair.
Yup... that's part of the Yankees' mystique. {inserts finger in throat}
Oh well money shouts!!!
When you mean left coast is that a big like the left band in Paris!

Left coast means California/Oregon/Washington.
Thanks I feel so educated for a European now.

ah oui, la rive gauche à Paris... c'est un peu comme ça. It's the West Coast... the term implies a politically liberal bent. (So I guess it wouldn't include Orange County, which is also on the West Coast, but decidedly not liberal... "behind the Orange Curtain," as it is often referred to here in California.)
I grew up in Massachusetts and loved it when johnny Damon played for the Sox hated to see him cut his hair and play for the evil empire (as we sox fans like to call the yankees) but now we live in south west florida so I am trying to root for the Devil Rays but thats hard to do LOL

Hey, the Rays are getting better every year. I expect that team to be in the playoffs in three to five years. I think they definitely get more support from the locals than your cross-state rivals, the Florida Marlins. 7,000 at a game? What a joke. By the way, I actually saw someone wearing a D-Rays cap here at Municipal Stadium in San Jose not too long ago (our minor league ballpark). I think their high-A franchise is in the California League. Visalia Oaks, maybe?
I go to the Oakland Coliseum fairly often for ball games (it's a lot cheaper than AT&T Park in San Francisco, and easier to get decent seats), and I remember when Johnny played for the A's. If I remember correctly -- and it wasn't all that long ago -- he started growing his hair out when he was with Oakland.
I agree the Rays should be good within the next 3 years as long as their ace Kazmare stays healthy
I haven't been to a game yet but from what I heard most of the people that go are for the visiting team
so its like the Rays play 182 away games
now as far as the marlins go I dont understand how ownership can dismantle a team that has just won it all???
and not just once but twice
Peace Bruce
First off a correction: he was not traded. He became a free
agent. So he signed with the team who offered the most money.
I was dissappointed that he left Red Sox Nation, that he sold
out and cut his hair, and that he went to the Evil Empire.
But look at from Damon's point of View. One injury it and
it could be the end of a career. So it makes sense to make
money while you can.
Too many athletes end up like Derek Sanderson......the career is
over, all the money went up the nose or in the arm. Now that
the career is over he is flat broke.
And make no mistake about it, one line drive to the arm,
one collision with the wall when you're trying to catch a
potential home run, one slide the wrong way and you're career
is toast. So I can't blame him for seeking the money while
he is able to.
I would add i'm glad that Damon is gone. His war wtih his
ex-wife was a distraction, his book was a distraction, he was
there to win a world series, not to sell a book and/or trash
his wife.
Thanks for the correction.
Yeah, those kinds of things are definitely annoying for fans who like to concentrate on the game and not all the "extra-curricular" BS. But, they did manage to win the WS. Barry Bonds has been on my team for, what, 14 seasons now? And the Giants haven't won a WS since 1954, twelve years before I was born. 2002 was the ultimate heartbreak. (Those blasted Angels of Satan.) I only hope to see the Giants win a WS at least once before I die. If they don't, I'll have to come back and terrorize them.
Could be worse. You could be a Cubs fan like me.
Oh... I'm sorry. Someday, someday...
While science is the criterion of truth for me, I believe that historic symbols have a psychological resonance which impacts behavior. Long hair has traditionally represented power. The story of Sampson in the Book of Judges illustrates the power of hair. I would even hazard another speculation. I think long haired men are more powerful but also rational, gentle, aware, peaceful when possible, and fair.
Time may come when the Yankees pay Johnny a bonus to grow back his hair.
