Somebody recently posted a progress picture in "period" clothing, and I thought I would too. I have a closet full of 60s clothing. Luckily it all still fits fine 40 years later.
Anyone remember these shirts? These were called cossack shirts, and they were in fashion for a few months in late-1968. I bought this one at Macy's (Santa Clara, CA) for about $15. On my way out I saw they had a portrait special going on. When I went over to the photo booth, they said they'd give me the portrait free if I'd pose in the shirt I just bought and let them use it in a store display. I went back later and got the portrait.
On my 56th birthday in 2004, I decided never to cut my hair again, and so this is 2 years later. It's often ending up in my mouth, etc., so I'm going to have to work on managing it. I shot the picture in the bathroom mirror, so it's reversed from the Macy's portrait.
So why the hell wasn't the 1968 picture in longhair? I dunno.
One word, and one word only: SWEET!!!!
'Cause you were a youngster and needed to find a job?
The new shot looks better than the old one.
As an aside, does anybody know why fashion options for men suck so badly in this day and age? I'd relish a chance to wear a shirt like that.
It was summer, and I was a junior at UC Berkeley. Long hair was no problem. Guess I was just sort of conservative although I smoked lots of pot.
No kidding. Glad I grew up!
I was walking past a Brooks Brothers store several weeks ago and walked through it as a short cut. There wasn't a single thing in the place I'd wear even if I got it free. I'd rather shop for clothing at a thrift store. I frequently wear my old clothes. I don't understand it, and I really hate the baggy look. I have to buy any clothes these days in Small or Medium.
I remember I picked up this guy hitchhiking at the time who was wearing one of those shirts, except in a tan color. I figured he had to be OK if he was wearing a shirt like that. It was about 100 degrees outside, so I don't remember why he said he was wearing long sleeves. Guess he just liked that shirt! He had short hair though.
You still look exactly the same as you did nearly 40 years ago, just a little older, wiser and with longer hair!
That is great that you still have all your old clothing/garments from the 60s and wear them regulary. People around here kill for vintage clothing and anything with the word 'retro' makes people take notice. I walk into most stores and the clothing sucks i won't buy it. Nothing beats jeans and flannies, i'm always in a set of those.
My friend's father still has a collection of suits, jackets and other clothing from the 1970s and 1980s. I can't believe they last through so many decades!
Keep growing, you look MUCH BETTER with long hair, and it makes you look considerably younger. Take care.
I'm really lucky - better knock on wood.
I wear current jeans and roughout leather shoes, but everything else is from my "collection". I have a lot of bell bottom corduroys that still work. Those are cool and without too much flare. Then there are all the way cool paisley shirts.
Me either! Clothes really last a long time! However, I work to wash them as seldom as possible and then I do it by hand for the outer garments. I don't want them to fade and get torn up. This shirt has never been washed in 40 years even though it's been worn a number of times. So that's the way it looked on the rack the day I bought it.
Thanks very much. Better late than never for long hair.
Nice series of pics. That got me thinking that I've got some pics that I can do something like that, also. There's no way I could fit into my clothes from 40 years ago! :)
I used to have a shirt similar to that, called a Nehru shirt. I had a yearbook picture taken in it. When I get back home [currently on a business trip] I'll scan it in and post it.

Damn, I gave away all the Nehru shirts. Guess you should never throw anything away!
Yeah... should've kept it. But now, I wouldn't be able to fit in it anyway! Still... it was a cool shirt.

What a sweet shirt! I wish my dad had saved all that stuff. I do have a few early 70's shirts of his that I do wear from time to time however.
Good picture! Thanks.

Great pictures - I love it!
I'm partial to the old fashions from the 60's and 70's. I wished I still had some of my stuff from the 70's - as it would have still fit me today. Thank goodness to thrift stores, garage sales, and eBay, I can find things from that time.
Congrats on two years of progress.
