I think this board is great. It's interesting and has a great community. I just think the layout is annoying. A traditional message board layout would be more convenient and less of an eyesore. By a traditional layout I mean a list of threads, and each thread is a link to the list of all the posts in the thread.
I'm sure nothing can be done about it, and I'm not asking anyone to change anything. I just thought this should be mentioned.
I thought PHPbb board software would be nice, you can lock threads (if the mods dont want anymore added to it) or delete it or sticky it (for important stuff) and most importantly, it allows the user to edit the post if they made a mistake on it (such as broken link or whatever) instead of making a new one since it would waste bandwidth and space if there are too many reposts. However I dont think the mods here like phpbb because I think there are a few things they dont like about it...
The board is most likely going to stay as is (personally, I think that is a good thing), however there is a different adress you can use to see the board a bit differently:
http://the-light.com/longhair/threadview2.html
I actually prefer to see everything in one page. the layout where you have to click on a topic, then click through multiple pages to see all the posts (if there are that many) is more annoying to me.
Disagree - this layout is very convenient - all the posts and responses can be seen on one page. Long may it remain so.
...recently-replied to messages return to the top of the screen.
That way, should anyone spot a post later that everyone else, they can comment on it if they wish, and bring it back to an active status, rather than perhaps starting a new thread, just to say: "Oh, I saw your post way lower down, and just wanted to comment..."
This method ensures all popular topics are kept at the top of the screen. There is a risk of people perhaps taking advantage of this system by deliberate 'bumping', but everyone on this site seems mature enough to not participate in such an activity.
Just an idea.
Definately. I've often posted something in a thread a couple of days old, and it just ends there, cause nobody noticed that I've made a new posting to it, so a thread is dead within a couple of days, no matter how active it is.
That's my only real grievance with this board.
I've posted a link to another view of the board that sorts recently updated threads to the top. For whatever reason, this view is rarely used. Should I add a link to it at the top of the main board?
And another view in two frames instead of three
Two frame threaded view (no ads)I prefer the normal view, except for that part about not putting newest on top. I have to admit I don't really like the framed look.
I would like a page that looked exactly like the normal page, just with newest threads on top.
I'll see if I can work one up. It shouldn't be too difficult.
That would be really nice :)
How's this? This is really just the other threaded view without the separate frames. I still need to add the header and footer, etc.
Hyperboard threadlist by dateWe've made numerous changes to this site over the years to have it reflect what we longhairs want. These features for the users, which this board has, seldom occur in other packages:
The site as-is also has a number of back-end features such as a very flexible moderation and anti-spam system. These features enable us to assure that the site maintain the safe, amicable, and on-topic ambiance to which we've all become accustomed.

We've had this discussion before, but although the layout is different from many of the other forum styles, the fact is that it works. Other formats would have advantages, but also disadvantages. It ain't bust, let's not fix it.
Yeh, one thing I do not like about the layout thing is that if you start a new thread and if nobody replies and new threads are being posted, it gets pushed waaaay down the page and people forget and or don't see that thread you posted. some guys might have something important to add to that thread i started but because it's now way down the page, it's forgotten.
Swing by and take a look when you have a chance so this topic doesn't keep coming up here on the board.
