Hey everyone,
Would you be able to see split ends if I showed you a close up picture of my hair? I'm just wondering, because my hair feels a bit rough on the ends, and tangles easy. I haven't had a trim since mid-december. I'm really thinking about getting one, but I want to see what you guys think.
I finally got me some jojoba oil too, the stuff is excellent. I mostly just put it on the ends of my hair, and it feels great the rest of the day, but by the next day it's just as dry. Or it seems like it. I rarely shampoo too, and haven't since I've been using the jojoba oil.
Anyway, here's the pictures... hope you can help me out.

Hey Ped Dizzler...
Hi have to say, first of all, the pictures are great! You've got such beautyfull hair colour and texture... really =) I love your hair... Now I don't think there are any split ends, actually I even think your ends look really healthy... Now they may feel rougher to you since you havent trim them for a while, but that doesn't mean you have to go for a trim... Just keep using the jojoba oil to see how it works for your hair, but I don't think a trim is necessary... let it keep on growing and don't worry... for what I see, it's perfect (and I mean it =) ) I wish you good luck! And hope it helped...
Hey thanks a bunch, Joao! I hope you're right, I hope it's just rough and not split!
I suppose I can keep trying to use the jojoba oil once a day and see what happens, I didn't expect to be using it this much though.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is enough detail in those photos to see split ends, if present. But here is what to do to see them yourself -- and to properly trim them without sacrificing overall length.
Grab a small amount of combed hair and twist it into a rope. The rope should be 5mm across or less once twisted. By twisting the hair, the ends are forced to poke out of the rope.
Some people recommend trimming anything that pokes out. I don't. Perfectly healthy hair can poke out. But what you've done is facilitate easy spotting of damaged hair.
Now shine a bright light at the twisted strand so that the ends are either backlit or sidelit. The hairs that are damaged will appear lighter in color where the damage is. This sort of damage is not repairable, so trimming the damage off is likely a good idea. Split ends look like a single hair forking into two or more hairs. This usually happens near a spot where the hair is already damaged, but not necessarily.
Hi Peg,
you got great hair, but, as Victor said, the resolution of these pictures may not suffice to spot split-ends. Maybe a close-up taken through a magnifying glass would help? But then, you will be able to spot split-ends yourself.
I had split ends for a while, and I have cut down on shampooing drastically, and I alternate between greasy stuff (Jojoba oil is probably fine) and silicone compounds (the famous dimethicone / cyclomethicone mixtures). And, if that doesn't do the trick, I trim about 1-2 cm (less than 1 inch), not more - usually only once a year.
Hope it grows and looks great forever!
Hans-Uwe
Thanks guys, I'll try everything you said!
