I know alot of guys on the board love metal, as do I. I was at a local show last night, (moshed , got kicked in the head, speared in the back, and hit in my misters, most painful show I've been to) and saw a band called From Ruin and some others. (you can find FR on myspace) I headbanged alot and when I got home my hair was so very tangled and I had no idea how to fix it. This isn't the first time this has happend of course, but this was the worst as my hair is getting longer. I tried finger combing and then brushing and I was as carefull as possible but I still felt and heard alot of breakage. Do any of you guys have a good ways to get tangles out after a heavy show?
You call that fun???? :-) Generally speaking if my "misters" get whacked I've got more important things to worry about than the music. {shrug} Ouch.
Only the staples. Start from the ends, finger comb first going all the way up to get rid of the worst of the mess, then comb or brush, from the "bottom up", to get the rest of the knots/mats out.
Next time, consider doing a multi-elastic ponytail -- or a bun. It may keep the damage to your hair to a minimum. Your misters will need a different treatment.
I use lots of conditioner first, then handcomb (when its dry again), then brush.

I don't headbang - but I do a lot of hiking and sometimes it can be really windy (as you can see from the photo) - causing my hair to tangle. I am just careful - fingercomb and then use a lot of conditioner. You just gotta have fun and still do the things you love. Don't worry about the hair too much - it will all work out in the end and look great!

hahaha, man...i've cracked my head open at shows from headbanging (o well, it healed). ummm, well...one thing is NEVER wear gel, hairspray, etc. to a show, it will only get disgusting and give your problems. secondly, don't wash your hair directly before or after a show, cause no matter what you put in it it will dry it out a little and dry hair tangles so basicly you want as much natural oils in it as possible (sounds disgusting i know but i'm not suggesting that you rub kfc chicken all over your scalp or anything). and thirdly, just finger comb as you've been doing. for one, no one at a metal show is going to have centerfold material hair at the time man, hahaha, secondly your hair will get knotty no matter what and brushes will just make it worse. keep rocking out, it's a rarity these days.
When I have serious tangles I have my best luck in the shower
with the water running on my hair. I seems to make my hair
easier to slip apart.
Your misters on the other hand I think that would be more painful
than being kicked in the head. A lot closer to vital organs.
There are detangling sprays that would help you detangle your hair when the situation is as bad as you stated... I bought one from L'oreal some time ago, still haven't used it but it's specially for beach and salty water... Tough you can find detangling sprays in lots of places, just look around... hope it helped, and good luck!
Crazy foolishness, I say.
For this type of situation, though, I recommend a shower where you gently wash and condition your hair. Condition with a good detangling conditioner. Aussie moist for damaged hair is a good one, for example.
Allow your hair to completely dry before doing any detangling. Dry hair maintains its stiffness better than wet hair. This stiffness assists in the detangling process.
Finger detangle what you can, but be prepared to not be able to do some detangling.
Using a porcupine brush, gently brush through your hair until you encounter some resistance. When you encounter resistance, remove the brush by moving it out of the hair in the direction parallel to the white bristles. This slides the bristles out, and the gentle bulb at the end of each bristle loosens the tangle slightly.
It'll take some practise to learn the technique, but once you've learned it, it becomes second nature.
While doing this process, tackle only small amounts of hair at a time.
Even with all the above steps, there will be some tight tangles that are very hard to undo. To undo these, hold the tight tangle between finger and thumb and then remove hairs one by one by pulling from the scalp side of the tangle. If you encounter resistance, stop or you'll just make the tangle tighter. Just move on to a different hair. You will find that by pulling out loose hairs, you will loosen the tangle enough that the tight ones become free.
Don't rush. Maybe I should have mentioned this first, but perhaps you'll remember better by mentioning it last.
Haha, yes I love to headbang especially to Slayer and Pantera :) I don't usually do it for long periods of time though so I can avoid a horribly stiff neck in the morning. But I know what you mean about the tangling. Just make sure you go about it slowly and gradually move your fingers through each knot instead of going at it with too much gusto
