I'm starting to wear my hair in a ponytail more, and I'm wondering how tight I should be putting it? I don't like how it looks really tight but there is a lot more frizz if it's just loosely done, rather then tightly on the back.
I've also heard the tighter it is, the more hairs it'll rip out and will be overall damaging?
as tight as you are comfortable. the tighter you have the hair tie, the more hairs you will most likely have ripped out upon removal.....not that big of a deal, just a few hairs...but it kind of hurts. if you're worried about the frizz, use a little gel before applying the tie. personally, i like a little bit of frizz, full bodied hair looks a whole hell of a lot better than straight and straggly.
I wet my hair when tying because when dry the hair is all frizzy and gets all over, and end up ripping more hair.
Of course for comfort, something tight can be annoying but at the same time hold all the hair in place for the longest time. Something too lose will just slip off. But a tip as to how NOT to lose hair when removing a Ponytie:
Grasp all the hair with one hand behind the tie as you carefully and slowly slide the tie down so that you feel "no tug" against the scalp. Every 2" or so grasp again lower as the tie moves downward. (It kind of rolls almost as it goes.) Repeat until the tie is free. I "think" you may be in for quite a surprise in seeing many a time not even one hair lost. :-)
Hope this helps.
