Hello everyone! I have a question...ive been growing my hair for over a year and a half...planning on growing it so its long enough to sit on! I have bi-racial hair...its very curly and thick. There are times when people want to see me brush my hair out so its a big huge afro...its huge when its brushed out..I love the feeling of having that much hair..its like a lions mane! My question is is doing that good for my hair? Will it damage it? Please let me know!
Yes, it WILL damage the hair, actually. Brushing your hair (with a brush, that is; combs or even your fingers are less damaging to use) is actually harmful to the hair, with the damage being proportional to how hard you brush. In other words, brushing out is a pretty bad idea, particularly for your kind of hair. Curly hair is generally dryer than straight, and brushing it just frizzes it out and makes it appear even drier.
If you want to get it all out, a slower but safer method would be to use your fingers to gently comb out and stretch the curls. Ideally, you should just leave your hair as it is, but if you must afro it out, go with a gentler method. Your hair will thank you in the end.
It sounds like your hair is similar to mine. You should post a pic sometime.
Hope that helps.
Peace
