I was reading this long hair faq, and it said one way of faster hair growth was taking vitamins for pregnant women. Does this work, and is it ok for guys to take?
That might be the way for some people and average hair just grows about 1/2" a month. I'd just let it grow I know its a long road but worth it and I've never taken any vitamins to try and help the process along.

No they won't make your hair grow faster. Yes they are safe for you to take. READ THE LABEL LOOK AT THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS!!!!!!!!!! It's the same as any over the counter vitamin relabeled for people who don't read these things.
Please see my post above. Pre-natal vitamins are NOT safe for men to take.

Men have found, myself included, that pre-natal vitamins make one's nails and beard grow faster. It's easy to see that since most of us keep our beards and nails quite short. It's not so easy to see if there's growth in one's mane, especially if you're already well on the way to becoming a longhair, because the hair is already so long and the relative change in length is minor in comparison to the existing length.
Growing out one's hair takes a long time. Like many, I quit taking the pre-natal vitamins becaue I did not want to expose my kidneys and liver to that barrage of chemicals for so long a time. I figured my hair would grow out eventually, and it did!

Would they have any effect of hair growth?
I've heard this before, and it would make sense that certain nutrients can promote hair growth - or probably more accurately, prevent lack of growth. And yes, prenatal vitamins are safe for you to take.

As I recall, a womens hair growth rate increases prior to the birth of her soon to be toddler "king"(Henry the 8th?), or "queen" (Elizabeth?). In other words, her OWN child. After the birth there is a lengthy period of "Mother" shedding massive amounts hair like you wouldn't believe.
I do not think this has anything to do with Vitamins. But you can always give it a try and let we guys know the results. :-)
This is NOT something a man should do. Pre-natal vitamins have in them, among other things, Iron. Women lose their iron levels when they have their period. When they are pregnant, extra iron helps in fetal development.
Men, on the other hand, absorb iron from their diets, and have virtully no way of losing iron unless they are very ill. High iron levels have been shown to be the cause of cancer.
don't take my word for it. Here's one of many articles you can find online:

Even if pre-natal vitamins would make your hair grow faster, it's not worth the risks to your health. If you get cancer, the treatments will cause you to LOSE YOUR HAIR. Think it through. Growing hair is a slow process, and there are some life lessons in that. Not everything worth having is immediate.

Yea... and too much iron in your blood will allow someone like Magneto to basically throw you around... so to speak.
haha, Tai Fu, that was one of the funniest things I've read today
Not to mention some interesting times at airport security! :)
I haven't heard about excess iron causing cancer, but I'll take your word for it. It's certainly conceivable.
The other problem (in my semi-informed opinion being a health industry worker) is that excess iron may cause haemochromatosis (or hemochromatosis for you Americans), a mostly hereditary condition that results in iron overload in the body. This overload damages the major organs in the body. There is no cure for haemochromatosis, just maintenance of it. This involves taking about 450mL (15fl/oz) of blood every now and then to bring down the iron levels. Until recently I was often taking a bag of blood from patients with this problem.

Pregnant and nursing women get improved growth rates, hair being an attractant to keep a mate's attention, so it is not the vitamins but the pregnancy at work. However, there are vitamins deigned for hair support of men that can reduce your shedding allowing each hair to have a longer lifespan. Some people also believe the hair vitamins help their hair grow faster. Those might be something you want to look into, sean.

Due to hormone changes, women "shed" very little during pregnancy. This gives them thicker (more) hair than normal towards the end of the pregnancy. Since so many women take prenatal vitamins, some people assume it was due to the vitamins.
But after the baby comes when hormone balance returns to normal, the new mother will experience more than normal shedding. She will shed all the hair that she would've during pregancy. Some women think they are going bald. But in the end, they will just end up with their normal number of hairs.
There is a period of decreased shedding, then a period of increased shedding. Then a return to normal.
