What are your favorite 5 metal bands? Here are mine:
1 In Flames
2 Amon Amarth
3 Hatebreed (metalcore)
4 Metallica (exluding the execrable St. Anger)
5 Vader
Making it slightly on topic, with the exception of Hatebreed, these bands have all had long hair for at least part of their histories. The lead singer of Hatebreed has good hair. I don't get why he wears it in such an ordinary boring conventional way.
To be honest, I don't listen to metal music at all... I'm more into rock music. My top favourite rock musicians in no particular order would be:
I don't know why I havent got into metal music yet... do you recommend any good songs that might get me into it??!
Thanks..
PEACE
Hey, you listed two of my favourite artists... Led Zeppelin and Bowie. ^_^ oh, and of course The Beatles.
I've been getting into progressive metal recently. I only know of a few prog metal bands I like so far:
Dream Theater
Liquid Tension Experiment
Ayreon
Angra
Cool man, you can't beat the old rock legends!! I'll try have a listen 2 some of them metal bands u listed. I can't promise that i'll like them tho. LOL.
Peace man.
I cant believe no ones mentioned Arch Enemy, Sharlee D'angelo's hair is amazing. they also play some great melodic death metal.
well here are my top five:
1. Emperor.
2. Arch Enemy.
3. Nightwish.
4. Carcass.
5. Children Of Bodom.
Metal is a form of rock music...
1. Hypocrisy
2.Decapitated
3. Death
4. Decrepit Birth
5. Fragments of Unbecoming
surprised no one said:
IRON MAIDEN
Hmm thats a tough one to name just five all time favorite metal bands cause there is so many but currently these are the metal/ bands that are in my cd player now
Enslaved
BML (out of Rochester,NY)
Misery Index
Celtic Frost
Opeth
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
Drudkh
Deathspell Omega
Demilich
Mostly death and black metal, as well as goregrind and thrash stuff.
Im more into Hard Rock Industrial music but here are m top 5 bands
1. Nirvana
2. Satyricon
3. Marilyn Manson
4. Murder Dolls/Wednesday 13
5. ROB ZOMBIE!
ROB!!!! lol, Zombie rocks so hard. Wasn't too keen on his last CD, though.
No mentions for Dragonfarce then...rofl...it amazes me that they have made 3 albums and people still buy that stuff!!!
Death and black metal here and our boys called Iron Maiden of course.
John.B
I love that word, "execrable." I haven't listened to any of the songs on St. Anger, but I've heard it's, well, execrable.
Not too much of a metal aficionado, but I do like the music -- I'm just not that familiar with too many metal bands. Some of the (rock) bands I like are:
Led Zeppelin
Alice in Chains
Godsmack
AC/DC
Metallica
Nickelback
Soundgarden
Audioslave
Queen
The Cars
Nazareth
Black Sabbath
Has anyone heard of a band called "Asschapel"? I was browsing the thrash section of Rasputin Records one day, and came across this group. The name cracked me up... I don't know their music at all, or if they're even popular (or still around).
Hehe, yeah, it's a pretty descriptive term. In this case, well-deserved. I can't believe Metallica would even put their name on that album. It sounded like someone beating a tin can in a basement fully of echoes.
There aren't enough bands that I like to create a Top 5 list, but my two favorites are Nightwish and Within Temption.
If you browse Nightwish's photo gallery, you'll find a steady progression from short to long hair on the keyboardist and guitarist. Both members ended service with the Finnish military when they formed the band, and still had crew cuts.
Hmmm, Its a hard list. But here it is:
1. Children of Bodom
2. Iron Maiden
3. Slayer
4. Dragonforce, In flames (tie)
5. Norther
Also I listen to wintersun, skyfire, imperanon, sonata arctica, black sabbath, Dimmu borgir, Amon amarth, ac/dc, led zep, arch enemy, rammstein, oomph ............ I will need 2,3 pages, but i dont want to waste board space!.
-Kumar
It's very hard to put them into any order, or to even select just 5, but here's my best shot:
Burzum
Decapitated
Wigrid
Darkthrone
Lux Occulta/Graveland
1st is always a toss up between Decapitated and Burzum because, to me, they are the ultimate in their respective genres, so it comes down to whatever mood I happen to be in.
I'm glad to see Drudkh receive a mention - what a terrific band.
Matt
Hi Jason,
Good choices in bands that's for sure. It's difficult to put a top 5 together. But let's just say I'm enjoy alot of new metal bands coming out of Finland at the moment (Imperanon, Wintersun and Finntroll).
Just a shame that a well known classic trained singer got delusions of grandure with a certain band and she got sacked. Oh well never let the fame and money go to your head, a ruin of many a good band.
John.
Can miss out on posting this thread hehe
1/ Opeth
2/ Dream Theater
3/ Northern Myst
4/ Breath of Sorrows
5/ Stormlord
Quiet getting into Black metal to :-)
OK just to show you all how out of it I am when it comes to metal, I have only just started to listen to metal music (hard to believe I imagine for all you guys) and I have only really gotten to listen to one band so far, (I am thorough and want to get it right lol) and its:
Dream Theater!
thanks to Axel for that :)
1. Iron Maiden
2. Metallica (except St ANGERS!!!)
3. Dream Theater
4. Deep Purple (I am not sure if they can be considered heavy metal)
5. Black Sabbath....
Iron Maiden
Helloween
Anathema (more the early stuff)
Eluveitie
Manowar (regarded as a bit cheesy - but I love it!)
and did I mention MAIDEN??? :D
Ah, you youngsters. Now for the old farts list:
1) Led Zeppelin
2) Deep Purple
3) Head East
4) Ted Nugent
5) Any number of the 1960's anti-war acid rock genre
I also am much more into classic rock; it's great to see some of the younger generation learning to appreciate what classic rock has to offer.
Big George
This is a tough one because i am a person who goes through musical phases. I still love Metallica but in truth, i have hardly been listening to them lately, i think their newer music has really turned me off their old stuff!
I can't believe that these same guys who created so many masterpieces in the 1980s are going back to nu-metal "Saint Anger" crap.
Anyways, i'll try a top 5 of my fav metal bands, but it's hard to order them, i'll try to but my biggest musical influences, in basing my decision.
1.Metallica(Probably my sole biggest musical influence)
2.Judas Priest(The "Metal Gods!")
3.Iron Maiden(still kicking hard after 25 or so years, so many good albums and still making good quality music)
4.MegaDeth(Even though the arch enemy of Metallica i really enjoy their brand of intensive thrash metal and Marty Friedman introduced a great dynamic form of soloing when he enlisted his services to Mr Mustaine.
5.Ratt(Gotta add one glam metal band in. I also love crue, poision, warrant but Ratt is my favourite). Warren Martini can play killer blues and killer shred riffs/licks/solos and he has some very tasty lead solos. All their releases from the 80s were the usual cheesy party lyrics which was popular at the time. However, you can't deny how catchy their songs are how effective a dual-guitar force of Martini and Crosby where.
They have so many good hits and their video clips are very humerous, lol.
Runners up include Ozzy Ozbourne, Dokken and Skid Row, lol.
Couldn't resist answering to this topic ;)
Favourite metal (no particular order): Pantera, (old) Metallica, Crowbar, Slayer, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Opeth, Pain of Salvation,...
Rock (some bordering metal I guess): Black Sabbath, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, The Doors, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, ...Lots of 60's and 70's stuff, Steely Dan, Canned Heat, The Animals, Jethro Tull,...
All time favourites are Pink Floyd and (Gabriel-era) Genesis.
Alos like lots of progressive stuff like Camel, Caravan, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, ....
This list could go on and on :)
Longhair is an obvious thing in common for most of the bands (which always makes the band pictures nicer to look at ;) )
here are my 5 favorite metal bands of all time!
1.pantera
2.slayer
3.black sabbath
4.six feet under
5.cryptopsy
Here's mine:
1: Opeth
2: Dan Swano (and related projects)
3: Children of Bodom.
4: Ensiferum.
5: The Project Hate MCMXCIX
Pretty much all of these bands have some really great hair, especially Opeth. Their keyboarder's got waist-length hair, it's incredible. Not even to mention the rest of the band.
If anyone's interested, here's my last.fm page - lists my top 50 artists and songs of all time.
(Warning - may contain some curses in song/band titles)
http://www.last.fm/user/psychoman364
1) Death
2) Iron Maiden
3) Slayer
4) Megadeth
5) Metallica (only first 4 albums)
Now that I look at it, it's all of the popular metal bands. Well, I guess they are popular for a reason, right?
I enjoy listening to Asphyx, Suffocation, Atheist, Cynic, Metal Church, Judas Priest, some Cannibal Corpse, Manowar, and At the Gates, but the ones I listed are definately my favorite.

I'm atheist, but it's always fun to toy around with ideas from other cultures/religions/what-have-you's. I mostly just like the sound and themes of that kind of metal. Scandinavian mythology and vikings rock, too. :)
Anyone else a fan of folk/heathen/pagan/whatever metal? It's my favorite. :D
Here are my current favorites:
Sonata Arctica (Great bunch of guys to hang out with as well)
Stratovarius (Timo K was awesome to hang out with)
Kamelot
Evergrey (Man, that lead singer is a big guy! He was taller than me by a good head when I saw them back in May!)
Nightwish
Of course, I could name many more, such as Iced Earth, Symphony X, Angra, Angel Dust, Helloween (Playing on the 18th of Oct), and Gamma Ray (who I also saw). At first, I did not really care much for DragonForce, but then I saw them, and also got to hang out with them at the bar afterwards. They were a great bunch of guys to just shoot the sh#t with, and as a result, it made me a fan.
Wow... I read through and saw some very interesting answers to this. I think someone even put Nirvana down which is a grunge band. There were alot so I cant be too terribly sure. All I can say is that there are alot of guys that understand metal... and a few that are COMPLETLY lost on this board. Haha. Anyway, I'll give the top 5 then list 5 more because there are really good bands other than the greats.

no longer in the group)
