Okay, I know it's probably a question that's been asked more times than you can count, but I was just curious who or what was everyone's inspiration for growing their hair long. I can't remember my original inspiration for wanting to grow mine long as that was about 13 years ago. But, when I made the decision to try growing it long again about three years ago, I think it was Lord of the Rings that inspired me as silly as that may sound. I guess it was just seeing all that hair (all wigs of course, but still cool nonetheless) that made me want to start growing mine again.
Hi Patrick,
I think it was some cool friends of mine in the 70's that inspired me at first, and about 15 years ago it was a great friend of mine who also got me interested in the "Grateful Dead". We have been to concerts of the "Darkstar Orchestra" (great GD cover band, lots of great long-hairs) since then. - In addition, a short-haired friend of mine told me that I look much better with hair at pony-tail length than at longish or awkward-stage length (a great and true friend of mine).
I'm proud to say that I have encouraged at least two or three other guy to grow their hair out since then :-)
Pass it on if you can, and Peace,
Hans-Uwe
Just want to add:
I can "inspire" someone else to grow his hair out only if he has a cause within himself. And I wouldn't be the "cause", but just the "trigger".
Likewise, I consider those who triggered what was already within me, as my "inspirations".
I guess it is all a question of definition...

Definitely Ozzy Osbourne.
In my case there was no outside inspiration. Starting so long ago in grade school I decided on my own that I wanted to have very long hair.
Like Justin, I had no "inspiration". Growing it long just seemed to be the "right thing to do" as if I'd always felt that way. It caused a large amount of friction in my family, too, I can tell you; but, I persevered, and once out of the family setting went about growing it without any regrets.
Why does one need an "inspiration" when having long hair is one of the most natural states for it to be in?
No inspiration beyond my own desire to grow my hair long.
my inspiration was looking in the mirror after a buzz cut 5 years ago. i wanted to pick the hair up off the floor and glue it back on to my head.
i look TERRIBLE with short hair!!
As for me I always liked long hair as far back as my childhood I saw many men both in public and on the TV. They all looked so cool. If women can have long hair and anything in between so why can't men. Many circumstances prevented me from growing out my hair in the past so now it is time Ive been growing for 18 months now and I like the feel of my hair touching my shoulders.
My inspiration comes from within, pulling at memories of high school in the late 60's and early 70's when it was not cool to not have long hair.
The draft and ROTC dictated that I keep my hair short during college; my work dictated the same since. After having changed industries, and being in business for myself, I realized that the restrictions were gone. I made a comment half in jest to my wife about having hair down to my butt, she said go for it, and here I am, 7 months later, with bangs touching my lips and hair brushing my shoulders. I love the feel of my hair moving independently; its been too many years since I have had that feeling. Mid back here I come.

Definately all of the metal bands I listen to, and the fact that I look like an idiot with short hair.
I have always wanted long hair and decided to stop getting it cut. Of course this website was an inspiration and help through the process.
I've always had a lifelong desire to grow my hair long. Even when I was 7 or 8 years old, I'd beg my mom not to cut my hair even when it was only an inch long or so, because I loved seeing the progress. But I always had super-short or buzzed hair for my childhood, and then they gradually decided to let me make my own decisions and have been growing it ever since. I've had a lot of difficulty getting through the long awkward stage, and my hair is also troublesome hair so the awkward stage is actually much longer than what the average person's would be. What keeps me inspired to shy away from cutting is snowboarder Shaun White, Johnny Depp's various long styles, and Kurt Russell's wavy mane in Escape From New York.
Exactly the same for me.
For me, it was my high school friends...(that just recently cut their hair for prom)
..and, of course, this board...when i found it.
Also, i had longish hair as a kid....and wanted to grow it back (and much longer) now b/c i loved it.

Like some other people have said, I didn't really have any outside inspiration. I finally just decided to stop cutting it. The only things that held me back before were a) a feeling that I couldn't deal with the messiness when it got to a certain stage, and b) my sense that I just didn't look good with long hair. Fortunately, I've overcome those things.
No matter how many times I say this I can't stress this enough but...HHH has been my inspiration for growing my hair long. For those of you who don't know who he is,he's a WWE wrestler..and has been succesful at associating long hair with bad-ass charachteristics..if you know what I mean.If it wasn't for him I'd probably hadn't made the decision to grow my hair long Thanks HHH!!
