Well I've just trimmed them with my trusty bear trimmer ..... and I gotta say it has made me look 10 years younger !!
However, is it better to let them grow and push the hair behind the ears ??
I keep my sideburns trimmed as well so as not to have them growing into my ear.
Sometimes it is easy to confuse between hair and facial hair there. I don't think many people trim non-facial hair.
Shave them to the top of the ear!
As you say you look younger and also considerably tidier.
I don't like shaving!
"Sideboards" is an unfamiliar term to me; but maybe this is a local term, or varying from country to country... I've always called them "sideBURNS".
Anyway, how you trim them depends totally on YOU! What look do YOU like best?
I've tried different loks over the years myself, --- from full beard to shaggy beard to gaotee, both with and without sideburns. For me, I've narrowed it down to usually either full beard (but I prefer it be kept trimmed) or a gøatee with no sideburns. But, since everybody's facial featers are different, I recommend experimenting with what looks best on you.

Be careful not to trim head hair. Leave a little sideburn hair untrimmed just to be sure.
I've had a goatee or a beard all year until early this week. Now I look really young. I look better with at least some stubble.
