You might remember I posted earlier this month about not feeling well and losing interest in my hair. Well, I'm feeling much better now and my interest and concern for my hair has completely returned.
I never really gave thought to actually cutting it but for the first time in a long time, I wasn't paying attention to it. I think this is an important lesson about the need to ride out negative feelings. We've all invested a lot of time into growing our hair. For many of us, it's an identity thing - we feel much more like ourselves with long hair. In my case, it was depression from being ill that caused me difficulty. There could be many other factors, however, that could contribute to losing interest.
The 2 week rule is certainly a protection. I would add to that rule to emphasize that those 2 weeks should be 2 weeks where you're thinking clearly, not depressed or overly stressed. You need to be sure the real you is making whatever decision you come to.
I've been trying to take better care of my hair again. I had gotten especially lazy on getting out tangles. This can be a time consuming process but if not done carefully, can damage your hair if it's rushed.
Jason: Keeep up your positive energy. I can't believe how fast your hair grows and how thick and smooth it is. It's gorgeous if you don't mind my saying
Yeah, one's mental outlook can affect so much. Just feeling better physically helps so much. Thanks about my hair.
great advice. that's terrific that you didn't cut it--it would have been a major downer and probably just made you more depressed. I've been sick for an extended period before and it can indeed do something negative to one's mental health so I sympathize. the two week rule is also an excellent idea, in fact 2 wks should maybe be a minimum.
Hey Jason,
I've been away from the board for quite awhile now, so I didn't see your earlier post on this topic; but glad to hear you're feeling better now!
Intersting that you should talk about not making a decison to cut when you're not feeling well or are under stress, --- because that's exactly what I did in Y2K, so I couldn't agree with you more.
The hair is looking great as ever, Jason! Take care.

Hi Ken,
Thanks. I know how much you regretted your 2000 cut. Cutting hair is not like shaving a beard which can be done on a whim with minimal consequences. When we're sick or feeling down, we just can't think clearly and a decision this drastic has to be done with a clear head.
Take care,
Jason
Hi Jason:
I'm glad you were able to ride out the bad times, and that your hair is none the worse for it. You have really beautiful hair; I have no doubt the person wearing it is just as beautiful.
peace,
dino
Thanks dino, that's very nice of you to say.
Hi Jason,
Yes depression is a terrible thing, glad you are feeling better.
Compliments on your hair and your website!
BTW I spotted the Babylon 5 shirt. I'm a fan too.
MattT
Haha, I was wondering if anyone would notice the shirt. Isn't B5 great? The best sci-fi show ever..
Thanks about my hair and site.
Hi Jason,
So pleased you're feeling better, and that your interest in your long hair has returned. I agree with you about the two week rule. It does offer some protection. I recently was a little concerned about the damage I may have caused by washing it too often, so I decided to try washing it every second or third day, rather than daily. Clearly I have been overdoing it and it became dry. I'll just have to get used to washing it less frequently and hope it settles down.
As usual, your hair is wonderful. I intend to grow mine in a fashion similar to yours, ie. all one length.
Take care!
LukeB
Hi Luke,
I know my hair goes through phases of feeling dry and crunchy. Usually by experimenting with different products and different washing/conditioning routines, I'm able to get it looking good again pretty quickly. I think you have a good idea to wash less. Maybe a bit of jojoba oil?
Yay for all one length!
Thanks,
Jason
Jason, there is nothing ambivalent about the fact that your hair looks fantastic!
You certainly do the half tail well.
Illnesses and physical setbacks can bring about feelings of apathy - they shall pass.
At times like that, I just lose myself in my hobbies or in getting work done. Anything that will give me a practical task to single-mindedly focus on.
Hope you're doing much better now.

Hey JASON
Good you cheered up and did not cut these beautiful...an advice keep the beard too...it suits you very well...
Hello
I'm glad you have regained your interest in the long hair, and with good reason as you have such great hair to have an interest in it seems.
It is my theory that over time, while one who has grown hair will lose interest in it in some degree, that is is not because they no longer want the hair, but is just part of the routine of life. That is, you have it and enjoy it, but it is more like something you just have, not something you are working to acquire. If you have known how to ride a bicycle for years, there is not that same thrill of riding without training wheels. The journey to a thing is many times as fun as having or acquiring the thing. That being said, I do wish you continued ardor for hair-having equal to or surpassing the hair-getting.
