Okay, here is the deal, alot of people think your hair grows faster if you trim like 1/2 inch every other month or something. I can tell you if you do that, your hair will never get long. I think the misconception got started cause alot of hairdressers tells you that to keep you coming. Of course knowing people they just repeat what they hear. ONLY get a trim if you are positive that you got split ends, and even then trim very little, and if your hair is of good health and you took care of it, you should not see any split ends until it gets long enough for you to do the trim yourself.
Also watch which hairdresser you go with. DO NOT go to a barber (you can tell which is which, barber shop tends to be somewhat run down, not so pretty, and hairdresser places tend to be well decorated) because all they are good at is shaving your head. A trim to them means shave. I was told that gay hairdresser tends to be the best place for longhair guys to get trims. No they are not going to go brokeback on you if you aren't that type. So dont be afraid of them. Also especially in Japan people like to have those akward stage type hair. Just to let you know they are a royal pain to maintain, expect trip to a competetant hairdresser at least every other month, at great expenses too (since it takes forever to get that kind of style they tend to charge some serious money for it). Same with "trendy" hairstyles.
In short, easiest style to maintain is either a buzz or long hair...
Thank you for that illuminating experience.
ROFL!
I don't think it matters much whether the hairdresser is gay/straight/etc, but you're right about the barbers, from what I've heard off this board anyway. People who've been to them usually talk about how their hair was butchered, or just hacked off. I'm sure there >are< some good barbers who know how to handle requests to maintain long hair properly, but they're probably few and far between.
Funny how you mention this, I live in Korea which has a fair number of transgendered women. I'd be willing to bet that if anyone was sympathetic to men trying to grow their hair long in this conservative and conformist country, it'd be them.
There are a very small number of guys here with long hair, and if I find one that speaks english I will ask him where he goes.
