Last night I met up with Trolleypup (our cranky, crazy Muni bus driver of the red furry costume and great bus stories) and got to try on one of his hats he uses for trailwork under a hard hat. They are made and sold for medical professionals but the hat with a ponytail pouch in the back seems pretty useful for a lot of other jobs too. They are more attractive than hairnets for food service workers and they seem ideal for physical labor when a man doesn't want his hair in the way or dirty. It can be worn alone or under a helmet, even to prevent tangles while sleeping.
Trolleypup has the red sushi pattern and a lot of the other cloth choices would be fine on men although strangely the site only has the ponytail hats in the women's section, as if men practicing medicine never have long hair. As a new company I'm thinking they might rethink that decision when they realize the martket they are ignoring. In any case, the hat fit Trolleypup's head so sizing is not an issue.

Thanks for posting that up, Ive been looking for something to keep my hair out of the dirt when Im working outdoors and this looks like itll work for me. Its too bad most of them are too feminine for guys to wear. Im going to try and make one in some basic colors and patterns.
If I get one I'll flatten it out and post a photo here. From what I recall the tail part is really twice as long as it looks. Half folds under and the end has a drawstring embedded in it to form the pouch when pulled to tie.

Wow! I really like those, especially the "Asia" pattern. They're the perfect combination of coolness and functionality, like a bandana you could wear in the workplace (well, maybe not, but it's close enough for me). I think I'll invest in one. Thanks for sharing this.
The nice thing about those busy designs is that they are less likely to show a sweat line if used for active work. I'm still surprised they don't have more plain ones though.

Oh Elizabeth ! Thank You Thank You Thank You !!
This time of year I spend 10-12 hours a day in the desert sun wearing a hard hat....I use a bandana held down with a sweat band under my hard hat, but the ponytail hangs out blowing in the wind, sun, dust, sand, etc......the scrub hats look perfect. thanks to TrollyPup also !!
For those looking for a way to keep cool on the job; check out the link below for cooling bandanas and hardhat cooling pads.

cooling bandanaI agree. What a bizarre thing for that company to do - to label these as 'women's'! I can't even begin to understand why they would make this prejudicial slight to men. This is something some conservative group might do but for a company to do this that is trying to make a profit selling these things? That's crazy and quite frankly, angers me.
Seeing the company comes out of Texas gave me part of the answer. I'm wondering if the designer just doesn't think men have long hair or doesn't think men should have it. For my own part I find I like more designs in the mens section than the ponytail area. Not only are men shorthaired according to that store, women don't have a taste for sports.

I remembered you wore a hard hat sometimes, Walter. Those neckbands are wonderful, much longer lasting than wet braids around my neck and it was always more practical for a hot classroom. Now I'm wondering if anybody makes a cap design with lots of those strips sewn together. That would be, well...cool.

The latest accessory that all us men should have!!! Thy certainly have a dire range of hat designs and suprised the ladies would entertain wear of the styles either. But it gave me a good giggle!!!

I was looking at those too and thinking most probably would never be seen outside an operating room. While I like the black with huge pink flowers it is not going to match much I wear.

I'm going to order one, but I wish they weren't so expensive (they sure are making money on it!)
I also wish they offered the ponytail hat in some of the patterns offered in the men's scrub hats.
It seems like a great idea for painting or under the car changing oil.
I'm sure my wife won't like it, but it's only for around the house. Thanks for sharing!
Checking out other sites for prices I see regular style patterns for $7 so the Blue Sky plain for $20 sounds like a lot. A group order wouldn't get the $24 ponytail version down much lower. All that is really needed is someone to add on a ponytail holder to a standard scrub hat.
Egads, there is an epidemic of assumptions out there. The other site I looked at also was offering different head sizes- small, medium, or the large which was billed as also for women with long hair to tuck it in. You'd think it would work for medium sized men who have hair to tuck in too. Maybe there really aren't many long haired doctors out there to be on people's minds.

Hi,
We at blue sky scrubs are really excited to see such passionate customers! You guys gave us some great feedback, and we'd like to send you free hats, no joke. Just send your address to operations@blueskyscrubs.com. There are a couple of things you should probably know about our company:
1)We are not a traditional 'evil corporation'. We are three young professionals who thought it would be cool to have pretty hats. As for our pricing, we are simply covering our costs, which are very high given the quality of the materials we use (imported cotton, satin ribbon etc.)
2) We are based in Austin, Texas, one of the most liberal cities in the country. Our classification of the hats as men's and women's was purely for convenience, and if you think 'long hair' and 'short hair' would be better classifications, we can work on making that change. We have had several men buy our "women's" hats, and vice versa, so we didn't think that the categorization of our hats was a major barrier to making purchases.
3) We would LOVE for our product to be used by anyone who finds them useful. We recently sent hats to HGTV and the Food Network to try and create a buzz about our hat in those communities. In fact, we will be rebranding soon to remove the 'scrub' stigma from our hats.
4) Look out for a 'blue sky classics' line releasing in the next few months, which will feature solid colors in our most popular styles, the pony and the new bonnet-style 'pixie' (due to launch on August 1st), both of which cater to indivduals with long hair.
Thanks so much for your feedback, and we if you have any other suggestions about our product, please email them to the address above.
Sincerely,
The blue sky scrubs team
