Well I think it finally happened to me,
I was at my local Walmart shopping and as I was leaving the store the women who checks people as they exist out for a receipt stopped me. She said anything not in a bag must be checked and to show receipt. At first that made sense but I've been going to this store for many years now and that's the first time I've been stopped for diet coke. I told her how come I'm stopped now after so many years? She said that's the policy and that's it. I walked feeling something wasn't quite right like if maybe I had short hair and looked a certain way it wouldn't have happened feeling...
God that store is unfriendly,
David
I've found WalMart, of all places, to be long hair friendly both with its customers and certainly with its employees. You may have just met an employee who was actually doing her job... and nothing more.
True,
That's why I called the post "Possible Discrimination". I suffer from Mental Depression and OCD so that does figure into my interaction with people at times. I was picked on so much as a child that to this day I feel people will still make fun of me at any moment. I'm doing better though and interestingly with long hair I'm feeling more confident with interactions with people and becoming possibly stronger when or if a situation pops up...
I'm trying not to look for discrimination but the fear is deep down that oneday it might happen and will I handle it well...
I think that if you look for discrimation, you'll find it. That's what it seems like you have done to me. Also, there are lots of retail employees who take their job WAY too seriously... this lady may have been one of them. Don't worry about it, I wouldn't categorize your walmart experience as discrimation.

Possible paranoia I think and would not worry.

I wouldn't have felt offended by this. I often get stopped and checked in many different ocasions but that is probably because of a number of reason; I'm young and I look even younger, my long beard, a currently high rate of shop lifting or just because of the fact that the employe, like Lee described it, was just doing her/his job . And you can't really blame them for that? Maybe the job was new to him and he had to show off his knowledge to the boss.
What!? But your hair isnt even long yet!(judging from your avatar) And why would anyone stop you? You were just imagining it. she wasnt being disicriminatory.
Hi David
Sounds to me like this Woman is just being "NIBBY," and had you looked at her shoes you would have probably seen wheels.
Here is how to take care of her.........."really" good care. Go in and have a talk with her superior. "Do not" ask her who this person is. This should do the trick.
Recently a similar (in a way) episode happened to myself. A store I have been going to for 15 years requires that you show your green membership card before allowing you in. Everybody there knows me quite well. Suddenly a few weeks ago I was asked to see my card where I am always passed through because they know I trade there alot. (The Women who asked I have even talked with in the past and laughed and joked with for at least 9 years!) All of a sudden she demands to see my entrance card. "Company Policy" she says in a loud tone. (hehehe........nobody gets away with something like that with me.) So my tactic was to wear her down. I fumbled with, dropped, fumbled some more with "trying" to pull that Green Card out of my wallet. Meanwhile a bigger and bigger crowd is waiting behing me for her to press the "magic button" to open the door for me. I continue minute after minute (pretending) I can't get the card out of my wallet. After about 7 minutes she actually asked me to step aside so the other customers could get into the store. Instead of simply stepping aside, I went to the exit door (which most people do not know will open "unless" you hand covers some lense built into the outside wall.) I went straight to the manager. He shook his head and couldn't believe and told me to just forget about it. (I can't use the words in which he expressed himself here, but they were really great!)
So, what do I do now? "If" I see "she" is on duty I put a green leaf in my mouth and as I enter wiggle it at her. Ha ha ha ha............and she actually allows me in the store!
But for you, I highly suggest you have a talk with the manager...............and don't be too quiet. Make sure others can hear. Wow............do the store managers ever hate letting the customers overhear a stupid episode.
Good luck and have fun playing the game! :-)
Justin~
Thank you Justin,
That's a great suggestion, I'm glad I at least stood up for myself and asked her why this is occuring, it made me feel better to do that and to turn here and get everyone's opinion. I'm evolving to a point now that when or if these moments occur I can like you say have fun with it or try my best to remain peaceful with any situation that may happen, easier said than done but I definitely want to take the high road in the future...
Unlike my local Walmart (Asda) in Harrogate where the alarms go off all the time as people stroll out with shoplifted items and the staff on the cigarette kiosk at the exit just stand there looking gormless. That reminds me - I need a new plasma TV.....
