'Pain'.
I understand now why it happened, but having stayed up all night watching the final match of the World Cup(in Australia the game started at 4:30am) and having gone crazy with joy, jumping up and down in my winter pyjamas as Italy won, I was initially quite shocked and saddened to see Mauro Camoranesi being sat down in a chair in the middle of the pitch while his teammates danced and sang around him and cut off his ponytail.
What the...?!!
However Mauro's smiling face and the obvious premeditation of the act, made it ok as I realised that he wasn't surprised with an impromtu cut.
Still I didn't like the fact that the haircut was so glorified on the biggest stage in sport. I also didn't like the fact that his hair looked so enviously great as he let it hang loose (it's usually in a ponytail or a bun) only to tie it bac and have it cut off :(
The only consolation was that the announcer never mentioned it and it was all over very quickly.
After the chop Mauro could later be seen carrying around his ponytail and smiling. His hair was about shoulder length at this point yet was later all cut off.
From: http://www.givemefootball.com/display.cfm?article=8696&type=1, I got:
Mauro Camoranesi indulged in an impromptu haircut after the final whistle as he sat in a circle of teammates. His flowing locks were cut to a more manageable level as the party games began and he was happy to let his hair be a distraction. "Tonight's result is fantastic," he said. "We were made to suffer, but we stood up and were counted. We gave our all on the pitch. I promised I'd get my hair cut if we won, so they cut it for me in the dressing room. I'll let it grow again though."
To end on a brighter note though, for all of you who question the attractive power of (male) hair on women, read this:

Ciao for now (Yes, I am still happy the Azzurri won!)
I can't believe he cut it! I don't normally watch soccer but I watched the final and was admiring his hair, especially afterwards when it was down. Why would mutilating himself in this fashion be the result of having won the World Cup? Bizarre..
twas funny! I was laughing outloud. It was obviously a bet or something before the match.
Hi,
first, congratulations to all Italians and people with Italian ancestry for the Azurri becoming world champions!
However, especially after knowing about that weird act of self-mutilation, I admit that I'd rather have seen France win (if it was not going to be Germany anyway, lol) - Zidane would have had nothing to lose - hairwise, that is ;-)
I can't help making another remark: There are cases of guys who enjoy being denutted (that's of course worse than hair...)
Hope that Torsten Frings from the German team keeps his hair...
Best wishes,
Hans-Uwe
LOL, for some reason that term totally cracked me up - literally laughing out loud. I don't think I've heard that term before but it's certainly descriptive!
See you soon,
Jason
Me too. I was imagining something like this:
fellow1: "You want to grab a bite to eat a little later today?"
fellow2: "No, sorry, I've got an appointment at the denutters."
ROFL! Interesting visual!

LOL! I could just picture that conversation. Thanks for your comments about my site, BTW...
I missed the WC on Sunday... I watched the semi-finals, but then I had to work on sunday during the game. I'm happy to hear Italy won... although I like France too, I'm more italian then French personally. The last article was a good one... especially the line "When did men get the idea that shaving their heads to mimic the look of a late-term AIDS patient is alluring?" ...hilarious. Thanks for sharing.

I've been here in Italy (Rome) for the last two weeks, so I've seen the the city erupt in wild celebration twice--first with the win against Germany in the semi-finals, and then of course with the finals. I was in the Circus Maximus the first weekend watching with what seemed like all of Rome on a giant screen, and then in a local restaraunt for the final. The horns blared almost all night. Yesterday, the team came home and Rome welcomed them in the Circus Maximus again, as Rome has been cheering athletic victors for over 2000 years. Really awesome.

Great! Now I'm jealous of Mauro's former (for now) hair, as well as you being in Italy itself!
Thanks a lot Robert!
Seriously though, that is amazing and I wish you the best for the rest of your trip.
Out of curiosity though how come you are in Italia at the moment?

Last spring I applied for and was accepted into an Institute for Latin teachers sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. I am one of 25 Latin teachers from across the nation, and we are here for 4 weeks visiting archeological sites and reading the Latin literature that talks about those sites. We are completing our second week in Rome and surrounding areas, and next week will move to an area near Naples so that we can visit and study the ancient sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
This is a thrill of a lifetime. It's extremely hot here and most of our work is outdoors, but it's also just delightful. Italians have been wonderful to us, and each day I come back to my hotel rather overwhelmed by all that I have taken in.
And, lots of longhaired men here, of all ages. I see long hair on men every day, young, middle aged, old. One night I stopped by a Gellateria to get Gelato (Ice Cream) and the man said to me in Italian--"your hair is down!". We both laughed. I'd been in to his shop several times for Gelato, and every time my hair was in a ponytail. He's 60 something. It feels like a rather accepting culture here.

I'd seen the haircut on tv but I hadn't realized that he got the rest cut off as well. After the first cut he still had quite a bit, and considering his comfort with unconventional styles it would have been still convenient for him. That's too bad. I stayed up to 4 am to watch the game, for the soccer of course, but I had an eye on Camoranesi.
it sounds like his team mate was behind it all

what a wste, he was kind of gorgeous
There's a saying that goes something like this "without darkness there is no light". I take that to mean that contrast enhances the positive things in life. The guy now has something to look forward to, having long hair again.
Haha. I just read the article about a women's perception. Earlier today as I walked 4 miles in the hot sun (damn broken car) I wished I had a mullet. Best of both worlds, no hair to stick to your face AND you still have hair freely blowing in the wind. Maybe I'll get one ;).
Well i was quite suprised when they cut off his ponytail but you gotta put it into context - it was a dare/bet.
I mean heck, when you win the world cup for your country the last thing you would worry about is your hair.
I think the last bit sums it up nicely - that he will let it grow back. Ofcourse he will! I can't wait to see him in 2010 with his new growth ponytail or bun. Honestly, i wouldn't worry about his hair, it will be back, don't you worry. As for "glorifying" his haircut on tv, well what isn't glorified these days? One just needs to wach Big Brother to see that much.
I wouldn't go as far as to call it "self mutilation", that is a bit exaggerated i think.
Ukraine had cool hair! LOL!
