I'm assuming that most of this site pertains to straight hair - are there any special tips for those with wavy/curly hair? No matter how often I condition my hair, it splits even when just a little long. I want to avoid the afro phase - is that possible? Perhaps I need hair vitamins!
Thanks.
Mitch,
I also am a curly-haired person... Right not, I'm in the middle of the "period of hell". Right now, although not the healthiest thing in the world, I am using hair spray, and immediate blow-dry to style my hair in the morning.
I am able to get my hair manageable looking through this, but I hear using moose may be a better alternative. You may want to check into this yourself. I actually wake up with my hair sticking around all over the place, but it doesn't really resemble an afro.
However, as you get through this stage of awkwardness, you hair should become more manageable as you can tie it into a pony-tail.
I realistically don't see myself doing this for another 6-8 months, and I'm already in month #4. As for split ends, I'm not too sure about this-- I haven't experienced this as of yet. Hopefully someone can help you with that one.
Good Luck,
Frank
Don't brush it, ever! And use a wide-toothed comb on it when wet, put whatever goop you use on it, like mousse or gel, and then try not to touch it or monkey with it after that. I'm not sure you can completely avoid the afro phase, but these steps minimize frizziness and damage. I got this info from a site called naturallycurly.com; it's geared for women but you can learn a lot about curly hair there. I also learned that curly hair is more fragile so you have to condition it and treat it gently.
I don't have straight hair but feel very welcome at this site. Don't go! We need all the "non-straights" we can get. I am also "in hell" and I am making use of a cap, which I can wear at work and which hides a multitude of sins. I am six months into the game. Finally, be careful if you use moose in your hair. (sorry)
