"It's still considered "subversive" for men to grow their hair long because they are "acting like the social group that has less power," Liss wrote."
I personally think that is a line of BS. I certainly don't feel "subversive" just because I chose to grow my hair long. I'd feel more "subversive" if I went with the rest of "society" and kept my hair short just because (as quoted from that very article) "Men typically have short hair, women long hair. It is acceptable for women to sport a short style because that is imitating the more powerful male ideal, Liss wrote."
However, I do agree with this line from that article:
"In her book, Weitz advises women to be careful about letting our children or spouses dictate hairstyles, or obsess over hair. Joke about hair flaws and move on. Make hair fun and nothing more.".
I think that applies just as much to men as it does to women.
What do you guys think? Will be interesting to see other's opinions on this.
Hello everyone,
This is a manipulative piece of tabloid trash, designed to make people feel complexed about their looks.
The part about saying men who choose to grow their hair long is subversive, reminds me of stuff I read in the National Enquirer back in the late seventies, when they had an article titled "You Need to have shorter hair in 1979". this article had the same tone as the present article: If you hold on to what you like, you are subversive.
Other people would dismiss this article as simply being "tongue in cheek", but I do feel a hint of manipulation.
Just laugh off this kind of pseudojournalistic trash, and keep your hair growing :)

I read the newspaper story. One of the people quoted is some author who's credentials were not given. anyone can write a book. the other one was a shrink. It's all psychobabble nonsense. Women usually get their hair cut because they are tired of fooling with it, not to emulate the more powerful gender or whatever was quoted. Men with long hair being subversive -- that's a joke. It might have been a misquote; maybe she said submissive but either way it's b.s. Men have long hair because they like it, period. Everyone who isn't a longhair wants to read all kinds of messages and meanings in long hair. It's got to mean something--it can't be just fun. people do all kinds of things that don't make sense to me because they are fun (to them). I don't get: bungee jumping, parachuting out of perfectly good airplanes, ice fishing, and rock climbing but I don't try to get some message out of them. for some reason hair is different.
I'm one of those subversives who started growing their
hair long in 1964.
If someone doesn't like it.....then tough potatoes.
"Hair that's healthy and shiny can make someone look and feel younger. A stagnant style, on the other hand, shows age. He heard a scary statistic recently: 80 percent of women haven't changed their hairstyle since high school. Women should tweak their hairstyles every six months. That will help keep their styles current."
Let me guess...that was written by a hair stylist who needs
the moeny/income/buisness?
When i started growing my hair in the 1960s we were subversive.
The Beatles came along with long, I started growing my hair
long too. So did many others. Then came the Viet Nam war,
I along with others protested that.
So I proudly proclaim that i'm one of those subversive
long hair hippie types.
We were idealistic, had hopes that we could change the world,
end war, end race discrimination, make the world a better place.
"It's still considered "subversive" for men to grow their hair long because they are "acting like the social group that has less power," Liss wrote."
That statement is wrong on so many levels. X_X
