Like most people with a scalp, I sometimes get dandruff. I probably get more dandruff than many of you here (looking at some of the *amazing* pictures that I'm seeing) and that is my problem.
Obviously, I'd like to not shampoo at all (or minimally), but choosing between dandruff and dryer-than-ideal hair is kind of a no-brainer.
Currently I'm using Trader Joe's "Nourish Spa" brand shampoo which not only doesn't contain "lauryl/laureth sulfates", but in fact hardly even contains any soaping agents at all. It ontains various kinds of fruit extracts as well (if these extracts have any acidity, they should act as a conditioner.)
What should I do?
Well, clinical dandruff typically entails using the pyrothine-zinc shampoos, which are rather strong. My brother had some serious dandruff issues, which he solved by shampooing everyday with regular shampoo (though he has short hair).
Oh, you all have misunderstood slightly (or rather, I failed to explain!). I don't use any anti-dandruff shampoo, the problem goes away when I use shampoo of any kind; however I do need to shampoo rather extensively.
How bad is (regular) shampoo for ones hair anyway?
I have to shampoo everyday, as I deal with hot temps and being outside. I use a mild shampoo and a conditioner, and have had no problems. Just don't go harsh.
try head and shoulder, if its not enough theres some Nizsomething shampoo that is stronger. They all use Zinc Pyrowhatever chemical as an active dandruff stopping agent. If you can find the chemical (there are some shops around my area that sells various shampoo chemicals) you can add it to a regular shampoo to turn it into dandruff shampoo. People with dry hair should not use this everyday unless you like very dry frizzy hair...
There is a trade-off between anti-dandruff shampoo(and all the other negative effects that go with it such as dry, damaged hair) and dandruff.
Maybe try using a small blob, barely enough to form a lather, use it sparingly and it will be kinder to your hair and less drying. You could even just use the old fashioned method and russle the old dandruff every morning to get the flakes out, LOL.
