Article on the MSN website that lists 12 jobs that are supposedly tolerant of "weird hair" (not necessarily long hair but the advice might apply). However one of the jobs listed is theme park mascot so the author must not know about 6 Flags. anyway here it is:
Instead of saying "chemist" it should just say "scientist". Most science jobs like physics, biology, chemistry, etc, are done behind the scenes or whatever so there should be no reason to restrict your hair.
Besides, scientists aren't exactly abundant.
good point. I was kind of irritated by the term "weird hair" which the author used to apply to any hair style in the minority such as spikes, mohawks, non-natural color dye jobs etc. I think there was some obvious bias revealed there but since the job list might be useful I chose to pass it along. she could have used some other term such as unconventional hair that would have been less loaded.
I dont know, in Taiwan it seems that most low end (like sales) jobs have few if any hair restriction as long as it's not mohawk or something that's really weird. They seem to have no problem with long hair or hairstyles. However in a more "formal" job such as banks or where suits calls the shot, there might be more hair restrictions. I know for sure that banks generally (except maybe CitiBank) have conservative hair restriction. However I do not and will not work at banks. Apart from the hair restriction the job itself is very stressful, plus you have to submit x number of credit apps or else they send you away. The convienence store I work at actually does have a hair restriction however the manager hasnt said anything, I dont plan to stay there anyways (just a college job) however I think the jobs I plan to work on (international trade/marketing stuff) doesnt seem to care about hair since they are mostly behind the scene work.
I know exactly what you mean. But to get jobs like a business man or a banker, there is generally more people than available positions. Scientists are fairly rare compared to business men/women. Companies can't be as picky as they would like to be.
I do contract systems admin as one of my hats. When I showed up at an attorney's office to fiddle with his giant networked Xerox multifunction machine, I joked that I didn't quite fit in with the general appearance of his office. He said in all seriousness that if I looked like he did, he'd assume I was an incompetent faker putting on airs. With my jeans and long hair, I looked just like he expected me to look in the function I was doing. So on some of those listed jobs, long hair along with casual clothes would almost seem to be a prerequisite!
I've pretty much had it all, bleached, shaved, mullet, mohawk, long, but i am a designer and therefore its probably an advantage as people think you will be more free-thinking and creative rather than conformist, grey and dull!!
