Hi,
This is my first post on this site but I've been lurking for a while. Anyway, I'm sure stories like this have been posted hundreds of times on here, but I'm so mad. I just need to vent.
After growing my hair out for 6 straight months (from a 1/2-inch buzz in January), I went in for a "trim" because the backs and especially sides were starting to get out of control (I work at a bank). You can guess what happened, yep, I got butchered. He fortunately left the top alone but what kills me is the choppiness of the cut. Much shorter than I wanted on the sides and back, yes. But the worst of it is how high up he cut the back, and the fact that it's UNEVEN back there!! I mean there's a spot in the back a couple inches below and to the right of my crown that is seriously like half the length of the hair 3 inches to the left of that spot.
Ugh. So now I guess I'll let it grow out, but I'm tempted to just trim the top myself b/c it's so out of proportion (way longer than the sides and back), and I really liked the way it was growing out all one length.
Here's a pic of me from about a month before I got it cut. You can't really see the length here but it was nice.
My ideal goal hair is like Billy Crudup in "Almost Famous."
Thanks for listening everyone!
I'd suggest not to trim the top, it would look better and be more manageable later.
By the way, you had and still have nice hair.
Thanks all for your replies. You guys are the best! I knew posting here would make me feel better.
It's only been about 3 weeks since "the cut" and it's already starting to fill in the back and sides. I still miss the curls but they'll be back soon enough.
Thanks again everyone!!
Sorry to hear your barber gave you such a bad hack job. You will be surprised how quick it grows back and starts to look like you like again. Usually the advice you will get here is to just let it grow for about a year or two before trimming anything. The top picture you are shooting for looks like the guy has about 8 or 9 inches of hair, so that is about 18 months from a bare scalp, so subtract out the present length you have and divide by two for how many months you are in now at your post trim length, then subtract that from 18 and that will be the time to reach you hair goal at a 1/2 inche per month growth rate. That is a cool length to go for and sure you will like it. You seem to have a similar hair type to that fellow's.
Oh, and the bank you work at, make DARN sure the bank 'professional' grooming policy does not prohibit implicitly or explicitly longer hair for men, as I have dealt with this, and it was not pretty!
So, welcome and check back from time to time for fellowship and hair questions. No use to be shy.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way but do not dispare. It happens all the time to guys who do not realize.
The "ONLY" way to long hair fastest of all is NOT to go near any clippers, shears, Salons or Barber Shops. When it grows on its own without artifical interfearance you will have the best looking long hair of all. Let it grow non-stop for at least 2 years.
Best of luck to you the second time around.........Bank or no Bank. Such clones they can be.
Ditto what the previous posters said. If it is any consolation then realise that 6 months is not a very long time, or 3 inches, however you look at it. Atleast you learnt your lesson at 6 months and 3 inches rather than at 2 years and 12 inches. It will grow back. Next time, let it grow for 2 years non-stop, then if you start having problems with split-ends and tangles, you can find a hairdresser(not 'butcher') that will not cut off more than you want.
