After reading thru RedTail Wolf nightmare story about being rejected by a mob of stupid hilly billys I have come to realize lately how lucky I am. Come to think of it, a fairly large part of the male population here in sweden, well perhaps outcounting some of the conservative country side, appears to have hair in atleast shoulder lenght. Perhaps this time of the year with all it's festivals and big town partys encourages people to grow it long, totally ruining it with ugly spray colors and techno yarn styled hair. And I can imagine many of them cut it buzz style in time for next school semester as most of them are young. But I would still say it's quite popular also in higher ages. Yes, we do have a lot of hardrockers and metal-heads around here but they are not the only part of this subculture. In media longhaired males is not a very uncommon sight either and I seldom hear comments like "why doesn't he get a haircut, he looks like a girl!" or "that is just immature". Many people even thinks it looks more sofisticated and that they would even consider that person more intelligent than the avarage. Ofcourse, I can't make any REAL statements from just my own personal observities but from my experiences this is not so far from the truth. Maybe it's about time we longhaired men start buildning are own communities around here. he he lol Well, just some thoughts of my home country.
yeh alot of longhairs in scandinavia, ireland and other north european places..
hehe, yeah, i agree with you, i see at least one if not more long-haired men everytime i go shopping someplace, for example at the grocery store, even up here in the small city of Kiruna:)
Thanks for sharing your observations about long-haired life in Sweden, metal-swede. I have no doubt that people there, as well as in other parts of northern Europe, make no issue about the length of a man's hair, as well as many other things.
Here where I live, in the San Francisco Bay Area, it's probably similar in terms of tolerance, but the United States in general is not so well-mannered when it comes to personal appearance. There are many, MANY self-righteous people in this country who think it's their right to tell others how they should look and what kind of clothes they should wear. In general, there's a lack of respect for one's personal life, even in more accepting and tolerant urban areas such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
That said, I love living in this area, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Plus, I don't know if it's just because I've been growing my hair long for less than a year, but lately I have noticed many, many men with long hair here in the Bay Area. Very cool.
dino
That is excellent to hear of the prevalence of long hair up in Sweden. It's a very nice country you live in, no doubt.
Maybe lots of the guys are remebering back to the days when Thor and Loki were around, remembering their roots.
He he, hell yeah why not? Perhaps it's something in our genes :D
Hail Thor!
maybe it's just because here in the Chicago area people are more longhair friendly, but i have NEVER had a stranger make a negative comment to me about my hair. or maybe they're just too busy trying to come up with a witty comment about my height!!
Montreal is a very tolerant city, and the number of longhairs seems to be increasing in this city.
In the past ten years I had very few disparaging remarks from strangers, but at one time I encountered a depressed sounding character muttering some unintelligible words at me, and saying that I am trying to be like "Louis the 14th".
I just cracked up after he dissappeared.
Have a nice day,
Georges in Montreal.
