Howdy fellas. I'm new, but have been looking at all your pics and messages for a little bit. I've had short hair my entire life, always the sandpapery feel in the back and sides, nothing longer than 2-3 inches on top, sometimes much shorter.
I've decided to grow my hair shoulder length/all one length. I'm nervous about my hair looking like crap, it seems to be growing out uneven, I have a lot of stray hairs that are longer than the rest of the hair on my head. It's been about 1.5 months since my last cut, it's starting to look bad (to me, I'm used to short short hair!). It's almost instinctual for me to think that the only solution is to cut it, but duh, if I cut it, it won't grow out. Any tips for beginners at early stages would be cool. I've read a lot on the message board, you all seem to be nice folks.
Welcome Nick
The only way to long hair to look the best of all is to simply allow it to grow no matter what it looks like as it does so. If at all possible, try and not be nervous about it as you are doing nothing wrong.........but, the hair has to be allowed to grow. In two years the results will astound you. And I might add, all the people along the way who might have had negative things to say about you while in the middle of the growing-out process as well.
Good luck to you and try not looking in the mirror all that much in this period of getting from Point A to B.
The wait is WELL worth it. AND..........once you have made it you are truly in the drivers seat.
Gotcha....
I just have to get over the idea and let it happen. I think about it a lot, I suppose I should just forget about it and check back in with myself in about a year. Hard not to look in the mirror though, I'm a little vain.
Welcome, Nick. Believe me, I understand your concerns about thinking your hair looks just too wild or weird, because I was the same way at first. The key is to just relax and go with the flow. You may think it just doesn't look right, because it will feel awkward, and you'll be wanting to look in the mirror a lot and "fix" it. Resist the urge... it will look fine, and no one else will think anything about it. One of the cool things about becoming a longhair is that you just learn to chill out and not worry so much -- this is my experience, anyway. (BTW, I've been growing mine for just under a year now.) Soon, you'll be looking in the mirror not with a critical eye, but an appreciative one.
Also, look at the progress pics that guys post on this board, and you'll see a wide range of lengths. Pay particular attention to the shorter ones, because your own hair will be at a relatively short length for a time. You'll notice that, no matter what length a guy's hair is, you can rarely (if ever) say that it looks "awkward" or "wrong." In fact, each man's hair has its own unique character and bestows upon its owner a look that's his alone. Your hair, especially as it grows long, will give you more distinction and you'll learn to settle in and not only feel comfortable with it, but you'll feel like it reinforces your own identity as well.
Happy growing, and post some pics now and then so we can see your progress.
peace,
dino
And hats and things help.
Hi Nick, I am in the process of growing out form a headshave, and to be honest am not getting too hung up on how it looks and just enjoying the journey, besides people see a different you to what you see in the mirror anyway.
Here is my progress pics, this helps me a lot. Good luck.
