ok i am in a sticky situation, i my hair is pretty long, it comes down past my shoulders maybe an inch, the problem is there is a formal dance coming up and i am not sure what would be best for it, a pony tail would be kind of cheesy and having it straight would be a problem as well.
i dont want to cut it but is there any alternatives that look good for a formal occasion?

How about a braid? And, regarding pony tails looking "cheesy"... says WHO??
I regularly go to a LOT of dances (Swing, Salsa, C&W, Ballroom, etc.), --- some of which are definitely on the "formal" side. Now, here's the part you may not like to hear: you will be remembered *far* more for your dancing ability than you will ever be remembered over how you wear your hair!
So, here's my serious suggestion: take a dance class or private lesson before this event, instead of worrying too much over how your hair will look. Long hair ALWAYS looks awesome, --- so long as it is clean and healthy-looking, and you at least arrive at the event with it nicely combed. Whatever happens to your hair once the music really starts to rock should end up being of no concern, so long as you're truly having fun boogieing on the dance floor!

hmm the reason im worrying is because i know alot of people arent let in because of what shoes they wear or any number of other reasons, it is a ROTC dance but they are pretty firm on dress codes even for people not in the ROTC
i would like to pull it back and use gel/hairspray to smooth it out and then straighten the back part but we arent sure that would be good.
thanks for the fast replies
You might've mentioned that in your original post. I was assuming it was a school dance.
;)
Do they have a dress code you can review?
Have been in the Military for 42 years retired 2 years ago and started letting my hair grow. Know what you are going through because of ROTC. Alot of pepole do not know that this is associated with the Military. The best advice I can give to you would be to have it done in a french braid or else have it put in a bun of some sort. It would give the effect of being short. LOL
Personally, I always wear my hair down for formal occasions. The fact that it's an ROTC dance changes everything, sort of. Hair length is not an item of a dress code, however much many people think it is. If they really think that it is, then they most likely won't let you in, which is a shame, but nothing to lose sleep over. Just put on your best smart clothes and if they let you in, then so well and good. If they don't, then it's no big deal.
How about a half tail? [NT]
