I've always loved this style. I find it reminiscent of how men in Lord of the Rings or other fantasy settings might wear their hair. Of course, I'm just at the beginning stages of learning how to braid so my technique leaves a lot to be desired. I think without the restrictions of what is 'acceptable' for male long hair styles, this would be my style of choice. Once I perfected it, that is.
First attempt, braid is way off center...
Second attempt, braid is centered but my hair on top loosened too much..
I think you've perfected it enough to wear it that way NOW. And, screw "what's 'acceptable' for male long hair styles" - make it your style of choice anyway. I like it.
Thanks Tazz. I wouldn't hesitate too much to wear that style in the general public. It's more my work setting that I don't think it wise to push too far so I usually just wear a low ponytail.
Ahhh, to heck with acceptable, that style is frikkin' awesome and super cool, absolute zero Kelvin!
Really it does remind one of Eomer of Rohan, or some other Rohirrim.
Bragi
Haha, absolute zero is cool indeed, thanks!
Eomer is also who came to my mind. I looked at some screen shots from LotR and he seems to always have it a halftail but it was hard to tell if at times it was braided. Next time I rewatch the movies I'll watch for it.
Jason that is pretty much the way I wear my hair. Try on both sides to braid a small braid to hold the side hair back and place behind ears. Really looks like the guy's in Lord of the Rings.
Thanks. Good idea about the side braids. I like how Legolas wears that. I think his halftail is loose but it would be interesting to see both the braided halftail and the braided sides.
That looks fantastic Jason. And in my part of the world, it would be completely acceptable in either a casual or formal setting.
Errr and, yes, I am jealous.
WWT
Thanks Whitetail. I might try wearing it the next time I go to the Mall. Work, well that's another story at least for now.
Whilst I can understand that a braid might be too much for work you don't have a problem with a low tail do you?
No problems. I even wear my hair loose on occasion.
Good!
the way you phrased itr suggested to me that you had some problems.
totally awesome makes me sad i cut mine =[
Thanks. I'm *very* happy you've decided to regrow. I thought you had awesome long hair, loved the curls.
That's a challenging style to do, and it's time-consuming. I've never succeded in doing one well :).
I think learning the regular braiding technique first helps and then moving on to a halftail braid. Once you get the motions down, your hands get programmed to follow the steps. Keeping the strands separated is the biggest challenge I find.
Hey, Rome here. Sorry for the o/t, but can you repost the pics you took in the set that includes your current avatar pic? I meant to save one of those pics as a "goal length/style" pic and forgot to, and cant fin the post anymore. The set of update pics included your current avatar. If you wouldnt mind, could you repost that set of pics?
Secondarily, it totally does look like a LOTR hairstyle! I love it. Might be my bias towards all things irish/scottish, but i think braids on men look very masculine. Take care and thanks in advance.
~Rome
Hey Rome,
Thanks dude. Here is the link to those pictures from my site for March 2006.
Jason
In your 2nd & 3rd pics, I think you did an AMAZING job with those half-tail braids, --- and yes, there's something about that style that I like a lot, too!
- Ken
Thanks Ken. You do such a great job with braids. I would *love* to see how your hair looks in a halftail braid! And we're due an update picture too! :)
Looks good! Perhaps you could give us some tips on how to braid behind your head without seeing what you're doing. I have to have my wife braid my hair. It would be nice if I could do it myself.
Thanks.
Well it took me a long time to learn to be honest. I started learning by braiding my bangs in front of my head just to learn the braiding technique. I then moved on to the regular full braid in back.
It's really just practice, practice, practice! I found a good time to practice was while watching TV. I'd do the braid, see how it looked and then try again.
Also, it might seem that looking at a mirror would help but I found it doesn't. It only makes it more confusing. I found that just going by feel is best.
It's also easier if your hair isn't on the frizzy side so freshly washed hair is harder to braid. I had used jojoba oil the day before in these pics and you can tell my hair is actually too far on the oily side (it didn't all wash out) but that helped with making the braids.
Yeah like Tazz said I don't think you should care what other people think of your hair or what they consider the style to be. And anyways, great braid indeed. Just browing through the forum makes me mad cuz my hair is still so short (almost 3 months progress only) ><
What a great style! I'd love to try something like that when my hair gets long enough. Wow-ness.
Maybe it's my laziness at math, but the braid doesn't seem too off-center to me. Perhaps I didn't really take a good look at its placement, but I thought it looked just fine. Your braiding prowess is certainly coming along. If I remember correctly, you posted a braid update before this not too long ago, and this current one is much improved, IMO.
And yes, it does certainly have that fantastical air to it, particularly with your hair color, which gives it a gentle, natural (that is, related to Nature) look. Blonde half-tail braids (that's a long name for a style, lol) look fine, but it's refreshing to see one on a different haircolor. You should definitely wear it out more often. I've found that people don't pay nearly as much attention to us as we usually think they will, and that even if they do, who cares - jealously manifests itself in many forms, after all.
How's Riley? (*hopes that's the name of the kitten*)
Keep it cool, man.
Peace
And I'd love to see it. I think a halftail braid would look cool with curly hair.
Thanks. It was actually just the first picture in which it was not centered. I redid it and got that part right the second time as shown in the second and third pictures.
Yeah, life is really too short to care that much about what people think.
Riley's great, thanks for asking. He's grown a lot and is really developing a personality and is very affectionate too.
Wow Jason, just look at your hair! Soooo long already!! Don't you dare cuting it again! ;)
You know, I will also ant to try that style in the future. I believe that there also exists a really big collection of hairstyles for long haired man to wear, and I will be proud to wear them all when I get the lenght to it. And I do think your braiding skills are very nice already (and I have an almost professional renaissance braiding course so...). If I were you, I'd try it out outside already, it looks good to me =)
I gongratulate you a lot on your achievements, you must be really proud =) Now on to waist lenght fella!!! Thank's for sharing the pictures =)
Thanks for the encouragement, João. I'm really curious about the professional renaissance braiding course. Did you take a special course in braiding? How cool! I know they have places to get your hair braided at renaissance faires.
I think you must be close to a length if not already there where you could do a halftail braid. I'd love to see one on you!
I'm too lazy to make braids, but I always thought they looked very nice, and that they add more interest to long hair.
Oh well...
I've always felt the same
Looks great. Now I'm more convinced than ever that I gotta learn to braid my own hair.
Jim
Thanks Jim. You should definitely go for it. Your hair would look amazing braided. I listed how I learned in my repsonse to Pat S. below.
Hey Jason, the half tail braid looks great. With a bit of practice it will get easier to do.
Long hair forever
Absalom
Thanks. Yeah, it won't be too long and my hands will get used to motions and it'll be more automatic.
Hi Jason,
it's so great to see how you pull off one great style after another! Makes me wish my hair was still getting longer, lol. You should get loads of compliments in your environment. Thanks for sharing the pictures!
See you soon!
Hans-Uwe
Thanks! It'll be interesting to see the reactions when I first wear it in public.
See you soon and I hope to email you later tonight.
Jason
