First off, thanks to everyone for all of the great advice here. My last haircut was a buzzcut to about 1/8th inch on October 3rd 2005. I know the date because its the date that I had my final interview for my current job HAHA! Fooled them!
Anyhow, as per the advice on this board, I haven't trimmed or thinned my hair at all during this time. But my hair is extremely thick. (I just sold my nice digital camera on eBay to help pay off some credit cards ;( otherwise I would take pictures.) But, my uncle is a barber who has been cutting hair for nearly 40 years and he told me he honestly believes I might have the thickest hair he's ever seen. That's saying something! Its extremely poofy if I don't put any gel or anything on it. I wear a haseball cap to work most of the time (thankfully I can get away with that) but my hair often just sticks out horribly to on the sides even though I try to tuck it up in the hat...
Enough rambling!!!!!! Basically, I have extremely thick hair thats wavy but not curly and I'm getting hammered hard by the awkward stage. Anyone got advice?
you can get it chemically straightend to change the texture of the hair, so it is not so poofy or wavy, or manually straighten it yourself, with a hair straighterner, or use a bllow dryer on a high heat setting :)
Honestly, just tough it out. The first few months are always gonna be some of the worst, and the best thing to do is to just leave your hair alone until the bangs are long enough to go behind your ears. I mean, take care of it(!); just don't worry about making it look spectactular. :P One thing you could try is slicking back your hair with gel.
Straightening your hair can cause damage to your hair, and blow-drying damages your hair the hotter you do it. I imagine even the "cool" setting will do some degree of damage to your hair.
Trust me, dude, just stick it out. My hair is way messier/curlier than yours sounds, and I just toughed out the first year. Now things are going a lot smoother.
HTH.
Peace
I went through exactly what you're going through now. When I used to get buzzcuts, I used to stall the buzzer-thing because my hair was so thick.
My best advice? Lots of gel and anti-frizz serum. Saved my life. Avoid blowdrying at all costs, it fries your hair and makes it look very bad, I speak from experience. It sucks to ehar it, but the best policy is...wait it out. because once it does get long, it'll look really great.
yeah my experience with the hot blow dryer was that it maximized the poofieness. ditch the blow dryer, comb it down with a wide tooth comb and let it air dry. it won't completely solve the problem but will help.
