Well about 3 weeks ago I went to a friend's 17th birthday party. In the 2 weeks leading up to said party my best friend was trying to convince me to let her straighten my hair, but I didn't want to risk the damage it could cause.
On the day before the party I caved in and told her that she could, so about an hour before the party started she came round to my house, straighteners in hand. It took about 45 minutes to straighten all of it, which was really suprising since I didn't know my hair was as thick as it is.
Anyhoot, this picture was taken at the party (it's messy 'cause I found a trampoline in the back guarden, mwahahaha) and I was incredibly pleased with how it looked, not to mention how shocked I was that it was as long as it is, having relatively curly hair. Aaaaanyways, afterwards I was very worried that the straighteners had damaged my hair but when I came to look closely to see if anything had been harmed the next day, I was overjoyed to find that in all I'd only gained about 5 split ends from it. With about a minute's work of lopping the ends of those hairs off I was back to normal again.
I just wanted to share that with you guys. :)
It does look cool! I think as long as you only do it seldomly, it shouldn't cause too big a problem.
Hi Metal Monstrosity,
this turned out phantastic - an incredibly great length / look! You should have no problem as long as you don't apply dye to chemically straightened hair (which could turn out disastrous). But, I take it, your hair was straightened with a heated straightening iron?
Hope it'll grow forever!

Thanks for sharing that great photo. Dude, i wouldn't be paranoid about heat straightening, if you do it occasionally it shouldn't have any negative impacts on your hair. Many women do it everyday! My sister straightens her hair probably around 3-4 times a week and her hair is in average condition.
If it took the girl 45 mins to straighten your hair then that is too long. When my sis does my hair it should only take 10 -15 mins at the most. The secret to reducing damage whilst straightening hair is to turn the heat down to a mild setting and to avoid applying constant heat at one section of hair for too long, keep the iron moving around the hair. It is a great novelty though, i love doing it on occasions.
