I have been working hard over the last several months to a year to really improve on the guitar. It takes me a lot of effort to improve, as I have a universal love of music combined with a universal lack of talent. Recently my wife commented on the appropriateness of my longer hair (now to my shoulders) and my playing the guitar.
Just for fun, and to satisfy my own unique curiosity, it would be interesting to find out how many of us fit the old stereotypes. So, how many of us here
1) Play the guitar (or as in my case, attempt to)
2) Play another musical instrument
3) Ride a motorcycle (bonus points for leather and chains)
4) Live an "organic" lifestyle (vegetarian, organic foods,etc)
I would think (hypothesis) that our percentages would be higher in these areas, as we tend to be people who have no problem going in a different direction from most.
I can only claim #1, albeit very poorly.
Big George
I play guitar and dabble with other instruments.....
I used to ride motorcycles, but not recently.
I like metal, often associated with long hair, but also like many other genres of music.

I play a keyboard;
Listen to classical music;
Prefer healthy food.
Oh and perhaps being supportive for environment defence should count too
Very interesting post. As for me:
1. Guitar's my first instrument. Started playing at age 11. That was -- years ago! ;)
2. I now play bass, keyboards, vibes, flute in addition to guitar.
3. I've been riding a motorcycle for the last 5 1/2 years. No chains but I do have a black leather jacket.
4. I try to eat healthy foods. Much better than the average American diet...

I play guitar, i dont ride any bikes, except bicycles... Im not so good at guitar but I like listening to progressive metal and stuff, and some blues too. I dont eat organic or veggies, in fact I hate vegtables. I eat alot of meat... and pizza and that kind of stuff, and alot of chinese food. I cant afford organic stuff cause they cost 3 times as much as regular food.
I've been playing the cello since I was 10 and like to play classical music. I don't eat organic foods but eat healthy most of the time. I don't ride a motorcycle or have my drivers license (I'm 16) but I ride my bicycle everywhere if that counts.

I guess I can claim all 4.1.I don't play guitar much anymore but I used too.2.I play a couple of hand drums,doumbeck and djembe and have started messing around with a didg.3.Bought a Harley in July,got the leathers.4.I'm mostly vegitarian.I hope to have pics of the bike soon.

Didj being a didjeridoo/didjeridu? That'd be so cool.
That's it.Took me 15-20 minutes to get a sound out of it but when I did it was spiritual.The sound goes into your soul.

You forgot being a metalhead or being a pothead if you have long hair. I do all, and play guitar, and play keyboard, and bass, and not into any of the vegan/hippie movements, nor do I ride a motorcycle. The biker stereotype is for older men with long hair, anyways.
I thought the response would be better and truer if I left illegal activities out of the equation. Also, some of us are old farts on here that fit that slot.
Haha yeah, but it's still all a stereotype. Stereotypes are meant to be largely false generalizations. :P
I don't smoke at all,not much into metal.Though I fit the older guy stereotype some of the guys I ride with are in their 20's.

I play guitar. I also play another instrument much, much better, which would be obvious from my screenname, except that for some reson the board displays the "greater than" symbol as a parentheses. Go figure. I also play piano, violin, and dabble in mandolin. I don't ride a motorcycle, although I would love to (insurance for a teenager is alarmingly expensive enough with my 106 horsepower bottom-of-the-line Civic), and I'm not really vegetarian, although I've been eating alot healthier recently (Little off-topic thing: my new year's resolutions were to not get a hair cut this year and lose weight. I haven't gotten a haircut and I've lost about 15 pounds so far this year). Back on topic, I'm also not a lazy slacker, hardcore environmentalist, or gay, which seem to be the other three stereotypes that people insist on dragging up.
Hi Bass>Guitar,
the fact that you play several instruments should be another big plus for your college grant application. I hope you get everything you want, and, if you feel like it, just let us know, how it went...
Happy growth forever, and all the best!

I play guitar, drums and ride a Suzuki Bandit, but I love a good steak!
1. I have a guitar, attempt to play it.
2. I have a keyboard, attempt to play it.
3. Don't have a motorcycle. Wouldn't mind having one, though.
4. My daughter is a vegatarian. I eat meat.

1) Heh, interesting. I play classical guitar (which is nice and even lovely at times, but I've always wanted an electric guitar).
2)I can also play my simple pan flute verrrrrry simply, and can drum on different surfaces pretty well. For some reason, my teachers don't appreciate my musicality in class, though. :P
I also do a lot of amateur digital music producing, and I'd love to go somewhere with it.
3) I ride my bike. It has 2 wheels, so it counts. :P It's just missing the engine, and working tires, and moving chains, you know, the small stuff. :P
4) Well, I'm a Nature lover and I mainly use organic haircare things, but it stops at my diet. :P
I think art or dressing differently should be categories too, with the second meaning just not dressing in the mainstream Ecko shirts every day.
All except for the last....guess I'm pretty predictable.
1) Extremely bad rhythymn guitar player (cover your ears);
2) Used to sing in a band, baritone, not bad if I say so myself;
3) Used to ride a motorbike and wear a leather jacket;
4) Eat vegeburgers, pro environment, Greenpeace etc;
5) FTW;
6) Make love not war;
7) Viva Kropotkin!
Old hippie rocker biker here. Guilty as charged!
I'm one of the "original" hippies but the only musical instrument
i pick up is the MP3 player.
I'm smart enough to know I can't sing and shouldn't even try.
(Think soemone scrapping their nails on a blackboard. That is
how my singing sounds.)
I don't fall under any of those, although I am involved in music, it's kind of an Industrial/Electronic kinda thing.
Yes, i play 80s metal, im pretty good. I love shred guitar stuff.
yes, bass.
No, but i wear leather apparel.
No. I eat crap.
1) Play the guitar (or as in my case, attempt to)
Learned for a few months.
2) Play another musical instrument
But then switched to bass, like I wanted to in the first place (I intend to play both eventually, going to minor in music in college)
3) Ride a motorcycle (bonus points for leather and chains)
Too poor to afford one. But, I can barely ride a bike, so I'm not too anxious to get a motorcycle.
4) Live an "organic" lifestyle (vegetarian, organic foods,etc)
Too poor to afford food from the organic store, otherwise I definately would. I still like meat, though. :D
However, I started growing my hair long before I even started listening to music at all.
Motorcycles are just cool.
And I consider myself a bit of an athlete, so I understand how REAL food can help your system out.
Since I've seen Ameircan Idol and America's Got Talent
(to annoy us) I've opted to save the world from being inflicted
with my lack of talent. I wouldn't even think of singing for
my wife, much less a show like American Idol.
Remember William Hung (She bangs, she bangs)? He sings alot better than I do.
Evem though I have waist length hair I couldn't carry a tune even with a handle on it.
See above.
Don't ride one. Do ride Bicycles though.
Don't see the point. All this food is grown organically but
then is exposed to all the junk in the air/in the ground/
etc.
Also when xxx store says it is organic I don't believe them.
Same with xxxxx corporation. I have to wonder how many coporations take regular food, slap an organic label on it.
Then they charge more for it when it isn't really organic.
chalk another one up for the ol' #1!
Hi Big George,
I guess i don't really fit in with any of these categories (other than wannabe!). In fact, the group of people I most relate to are dancers, --- specifically, Swing, Salsa, C&W, and some Ballroom. So, I'm a mis-fit wherever I go (lol!)!! I used to want to surf, though... does that count? Here's my answers...
If I had the free-time to pursue, yes, that would be fun!
Ditto (see answer to #1...)
Nope. Fell off it the last time I attempted it!
In THEORY, i totall support it! In practice, though... I eat anything in sight!
- Ken
I meant to answer this too, but forgot. I hope people are still reading this thread! LOL
Anyway, insofar as it applies to me:
1) I know how to strum a few chords and even play a short little classical exercise, but as far as actually "playing the guitar," sadly, no.
2) Now there I can claim something. I play cello, piano, and a whole bunch of woodwind instruments (sax, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, and flute).
3) Don't I wish... someday!
4) Um, well, since I just ate two carnitas soft tacos (shredded, marinated pork), I guess I don't qualify for this one either. I won't even mention my penchant for Jack-in-the-Box and In-N-Out Burger. Oops, just did. Oh well...
One out of four ain't bad, huh? Guess I just don't fit the stereotype.
dino
1) Haven't played the guitar for some time, but planning to pick it up again.
2) Bass guitar, beginner on keyboards.
3) No, but I love to see hordes of bikers on the road.
4) I try to eat healthy as much as possible, because it's really effectve.
Big George:
(1) I've been playing for about 33 years now. Both acoustic and
electric. I also collect them & vintage Fender amps.
(2) I've played 5 string banjo for as long. I also play
hammered dulcimer.
(3) Yep..I'm one of the "stereotypical older guys with long
hair" in a black leather vest or jacket and doo rag you
see riding around on one of the big air cooled v-twins.
Chains (Indian nickle head vest extenders) go with the
vest. ;O)
(4) Unfortunately no..but it would be better if I did given
my ldl levels. I'm a voracious carnivore.
