Ok well I'm not sure if this counts at all, but the guy who basically founded the sport of mountain biking quit racing (road bikes) when he was 18 to 22 years old back in the 70's. Like I said I don't know if he still has longhair, but it's an example of someone who was persecuted because of it and went on to do great things. In case anyone's wondering the rule was lifted in 1972 which is why he started racing roads again.
Here's the link, it's a really interesting read of his personal history and how he's influenced biking over the years.

I hope everyone's doing great. I'm not sure if I "belong" here anymore since I cut my hair, but I figure I can stick around as long as I don't declare myself permanantly shorthaired! 8-)
What an interesting link down to the bike covered bus! I'm still shaking my head over Gary Fisher having to sit out four years of competition because of his hair length. I see on his site http://fisherbikes.com/history/ it doesn't appear much longer than his shoulders. Not exactly long enough to pose a hazzard to passing cyclists whose wheels could get caught up in his hair.
Well, I surely don't have manly long hair sprouting out of my head either. ;-) This place is for people interested (in positive ways!) in the topic. You could swear off long hair for life on yourself and still be at home here with contributions like the Fisher one.

As I was reading this it occurred to me did this guy really
"invent" the mountain bike? In the late 70s a group of us
were building a human powered vehicle to break the land speed
record, a number of mountain bikes were available at the time.
Some of the people who worked with us on the human powered vehicle had been building/selling mountain bikes for years.
Oh and no we didn't break the speed record, didn't even come
close.
