For the past 11 and a half months I have been combing my hair with a wide tooth comb after I shower. Lately, I just have not liked the flatness this has given my naturally wavy/curly hair. I decided to try just finger combing after my shower yesterday to see how it turned out. The result was much better defined curls/waves and fuller, nicer looking hair. I think I will continue with this. I may have to give it a thorough combing ocassionally just to keep it from tangling too bad, but I think this method is what works best for me. Anybody else finger comb only?
BTW, only 4 days until my 18th birthday, 8 days until I move into my college dorm, and 10 days until 1 year progress =)
In my opinion finger combing is perfectly fine. That is what I've been doing all these years...actually I rarely (never!) use comb.
I always used my fingers even when my hair was short. But I guess this finger styling works only for straight hair I guess...don't know how it feels if the hair is curly or wavy! Nonetheless care must be taken when hair is wet.
And congratulations for (BTW, only 4 days until my 18th birthday, 8 days until I move into my college dorm, and 10 days until 1 year progress ) all that!
Stay happy and let it grow!
Hey SOADdude, congratulations on all the important life-events coming up. Where are you going to college, and what will you be studying? (You will be studying, right?)
As for my hair, I usually use the wide-tooth comb instead of finger combing, only because I feel like I already have too much volume and waviness in my hair. I'm a little afraid of the potential results if I try to "poof" it up, but then again, maybe that's exactly what I should try!

Yes, I finger-comb all the time. Once in a while I'll use a very wide toothed comb, but it's finger-combing 100% with me.
Happy Birthday!
HAPPY IN-4-DAYS BIRTHDAY! And stuff. Good luck with good presents.
As to the finger-combing, I switched from combing a few months ago to only using my fingers. Like you, I didn't like how straight the comb made my curls/waves. But now, my curls are a lot curlier and my waves much wavier. 'Tis all good. It's also better for sensing tension on your hair and preventing you from ripping strands out.
Unlike most people, I start from the top and just randomly comb downwards. It just feels more natural for me. *shrugs*
I fingercomb to detangle throughly, then comb to finish. Works well for me, and I can certainly skip the combing.
I use a pick on my hair. The teeth are spaced wide apart. I do frequently use my fingers to gently separate tangles, and to take knots apart, one hair at a time, when necessary.
From my observation, finger combing, when done exclusively, probably works best on COARSE hair. I have mostly fine hair so I need to use a pick in additiion to fingers to get the best results.
I know of a man with beautiful coarse, blond, hair that he keeps trimmed at waist length. He uses ONLY his fingers to groom his hair. Although his hair is not as long as mine, he has the most beautiful hair I have ever seen on any guy. He is so lucky, his hair does not tangle, allowing him to wear it loose outdoors.
