Hi everyone,
I've been growing my hair since November (it's now August) from only a crew cut and my hair is only about 5-6 inches long. Is that normal? I feel like it should be growing longer. My hair is thick and wavy, and very full, but still not long I think.
If I'm growing it out, should I cut the sides and bottom of the back? It's looking funky and I was wondering if I should. I get puffy on the sides and it grows out the sides into a mane kinda thing on the bottom.
Thanks :)
Hi Revan:
I don't think your progress is abnormally slow. Average growth is about half an inch a month, so growing for eight months would give you an additional length of four inches (if your growth rate is average, that is). Some of us grow more quickly, some more slowly.
Your hair looks great! That dark color, with the goatee, is a nice look. I think you should experiment with it and see what you like the best. Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be just fine, as long as you like it.
peace,
dino
Thanks man, and thanks everyone for their comments. It's reassuring, I just wish the hair on the back of my neck wouldn't stand up lol.
Well Dino already covered the hair growth rate and yours seems fine by the 1/2 an inch a month standard.
As for cutting anything while growing out the prevailing wisdom around here is to not cut anything at all for a very long time. Can be up to two years or more, only if you encounter some damage like split ends would you need to do something sooner. I would leave it alone and just put up with the odd awkward stage, its something everybody endures but your hair will look best the quickest if you don't cut anything. If you hate it just grin and bear it, you can always come here and gripe, you will always get a sympathetic ear here :)
That's pretty normal given the average 1/2 inch per month rate. You look like you're "on target".
Generally speaking, cutting during the "growing out" stage is ill-advised as the cuttings will only be a setback to overall progress. So, unless there are compelling (VERY compelling) reasons for trims they're best to be avoided.
You don't state what your "goal length" is, so the above advice may be tempered by what you're trying to achieve. If your goal is "terminal length" then trims are certainly contraindicated; if you're trying for full, even, shoulder-length then perhaps they may be useful once the dreaded "awkward stage" is behind you.
Nothing to worry about. Your hair is growing at the normal rate.
Don't cut a thing no matter what it looks like in the beginning stages. If you do you will miss-out on the best look ever once your hair becomes longer.
I am at same stage as you - have been growing out since November and progress feels so slow...but give it another six months and I'll be ready to post a pic. I think this is a difficult stage because I just long for it to be shoulder length. Anyway keep going....
I get the same sort of things, but I just ignore it and try and enjoy it.
Anyway you have a very cool look going on there right now.
Thanks man, I really appreciate it.
I just shaved the stach and just got the long goatee hehe. fun.
