I can't beleive that this still happens in the 21st century!

This happened last year, but was only posted on the BBC site last month. The boy was suspended while he was close to taking his GCSEs, apparently. For non-Brits, those are school leaving exams taken ar age 16.
His parents supported him and went to court, but were forced into mediation, the result of which was finishing his GCSEs there and then leaving the school to do his A-levels elsewhere (did he leave or was he pushed?). Again, for non-Brits, A-levels are basically college entrance exams. I imagine he probably went to community college to do his A-levels, although it's not specified, so it could mean he went to another school.
Hi elektros,
I'm still surprised, but that kind of thing does seem to happen in some private British schools from time to time. Apparently, the courts even grant schools the right to impose gender-specific hair rules - and they may not want to be seen doing just that.
As far as mediation goes, in Germany, courts urge or pressure litigants into some mediated "solution" all the time, because you cannot appeal against the result of mediation, and that means less work for the overworked court system.
Still, I have worked in Britain as a professional for over a year (not in any of the "creative" fields), and no-one has ever given me problems - I suppose they simply were too pragmatic because they needed my work. So, it seems such rules are usually imposed on vulnerable people.
Lets help children to defend their right of self expression, hair-wise and otherwise, whenever appropriate.

Wow Just goes to show what a pathetic Country I come from !

Happens in a number of countries in places. Not just a British isssue at all.
Yeah I can't believe crap like this still goes on. There have been a few cases in Ireland and it's pretty dumb imo. Thank god my school never did it.
they have rules, depending on the school and, yes, they are part of the whole old fashioned way, i remember wanting to learn about stage lights and was told i couldnt because i wore a skirt and i couldnt crawl about 'up there' ecause people would see up it, i was not allowed to wear my gym shorts or trousers because i was a girl - stuipid, old fashioned, welcome to part of the uk!
same old thing here, I hope they win, its ridicules! they should have said he was sikh, that would be ok, they would get their arses kicked if it wasnt!!!
