My friend and I are being drafted into the Israeli Defence Forces and soon both of our heads will be completely shaved. He immigrated a few months before me so he is going in sooner so I wanted to get some pictures of our hair together for the last time before the hair slaughter. As you can see our hair is massively, Jewfro scary. That's me on the left.
Just wanted to tell you guys this so you can mourn with us the loss of our beaufitul mains.
Here in the US it's optional. Oh, well.
Don't think too much about your hair (which is very nice, by the way)...
...just learn to STAY SAFE!!!
I heard girls are also required to join the israel army as well, do they shave hair for girls as well?
i think girls are required to cut their hair to their shoulders or keep it in a bun =/
to be honest that doesnt sound like a very fun country to live in if they make you join the military at 18
To be fair though there are countries that are worse.
For example some countries took 12 year old kids and at the
point of a gun gave them two choices.....join the military
today or die.
Also in Isreal, if they didn't join the military, the choice
would be dying today when Hamas drives them into the ocean
or dying tomorrow when Hamas drives them into the ocean.
Yeah cutting your hair and joining the military is no fun,
but consider the alternative. Death is no fun either.
Sure is some interesting opinons you have their.
Hi Robin,
sorry to hear that your new year will start with being drafted - I'll pray that you and your best friend will be safe, and that there will be peace in your region. I also pray that you and your best friend will be spared any ugly situations.
My country (Germany) is one of the few European countries where we still have the draft. However, due to gender equality considerations, the courts did not upheld gender-specific hair regulations. Nevertheless, the old regulations might still apply to any units serving abroad...
Hope you can both grow your phantastic manes back as quickly as possible...
Hans-Uwe
Thanks for the support and prayers always welcome.
Boychik,
Zol zion mit mazel. Zay gezunt, shalom
you guys are young and you will be able to grow it back in 3 years. Correct me if I am wrong, military service in Israel is for 3 years, and then you are in the reserves for another 25 years. If I remember correctly, you may have long hair in the reserves.
You both have very nice manes and are an inspiration to all of those here with curly hair.
Try to stay safe, and keep your wits about you, while on active duty.
Shalom
Absalom
Yes you are correct, 3 years compulsory sevice then reserves until you are 49(45 for combat units). Yes in reserves you can have hair down to your knees if you want.
That's too bad for you, but just remember to stay safe. The hair can grow back!
We still have something akin to drafting in Denmark, but it's sort of a lottery where some get out and some get in. You can always refuse, and do civil service instead.
Those are two of the coolest Jewfros I've ever seen! I wish you guys safety and hope everything settles down soon there. I was asked once if I was a rabbi when my hair had made the very curly forelocks one day when the humidity was high and when it was longer back in the spring. I hope you guys can grow your hair back even longer when you finish the service. It will be passed before you know it.
Just be safe!
May God go with you and protect you.

Shalom Chaverim,
You 'noh-tain' a big gift to your country and your people by doing this. I and million of others are proud of you.
Just be safe for the next few years. Use your head and your heart and trust in Hashem.
& Don't be bitter. Your 'Jewfros' will be back, bigger and better before you know it!
Much love from your bro in Sydney.
Toda Roba Dean, I love the encouragement.
You have absolutly amazing hair dude, it sucks that it will be gone, If it was like that in the U.S. I would move, well good luck , and be safe, I hope you grow it back in 3 years.
Wow thanks for that. Amazing......wow.
good luck and take care
Shalom, Robin (from a Robyn). Be safe. I wish you both an easy as possible service. If one must be military, IDF is the best.
I will remember the two of you at shul.
