I've always had the odd flake or two to deal with, and that wasn't too much of a problem. Recently the dandruff has gotten a lot worse however. And to top it off, part of my scalp (top of my parting line) has become seriously inflamed. It has no become scaly and it looks like my hair is thinning around that spot. I'm hoping the redness of the scalp just makes it look that way! I'm really in a panic now. I've tried Head & Shoulders for a while and it seems to of made the problem worse. I'm thinking of calling the doctor to get some advice, as I'm worried about hair loss and the itching is driving me mad! I've looked into what it could be and it seems like seborrhoeic dermatitis. I've always had little flare-ups around my nose and the back of my ears too, as the symptons describe.
Has anyone any experience of this? Can it cause hair loss, or is the hair loss the result of itching? If you have, how did you treat it, and how is your hair now?
I know I might sound a little OTT, but I've spent near enough 2 years growing my mane and I've become very attatched to it :)
Any help/advice/solutions/comments will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!
yeah, get to a dermatologist. This is something beyond fooling around with Head and Shoulders or some over the counter ointment. you don't know what you are dealing with so you need a dr. to tell you. could be any number of things.
I've had this before and continue to have the occasional outbreak.
Basically my advice is to see a dermatologist ASAP and not to scratch or put your fingers anywhere on your scalp.
When I went to the dermo he gave me Novasone lotion (some help) and nizoral shampoo and cream (coz I had a bit on my face too) which basically got rid of it for me.
Good luck with it!
Thanks the reply! It's hard not to touch the scalp but I'm doing my best not to scratch it. I'm ringing the doctor's first thing Monday morning and seeing whether I can get an appointment with a dermatologist. Over the weekend my scalp has become even more covered with scales, and they are clearly visible now.
I'm glad you got it all sorted, it gives me some hope :)
Hey there!
As you, I also have seborrea dermatitis, and I can say don't worry about it =) I myself have also been growing my hair for almost 2 years now and it is in good condition. I haven't been to the dermathologist but I found a solution for my problem, by going to the pharmacy and asking the doctor there. This scalp irritation may be caused by stress, sweat and other things, but it is cronical. Just try to avoid itching. I am using a treatment shampoo called Nizoral, and it does wonders. It is harsh on the hair but you would manage. It is suposed to be used one to two times a week for the first four weeks of treatment and then only once a week, while you're washing your hair with another shampoo for a second whash of the week. You can also use conditioner along with Nizoral.
My advice would be to visit a pharmacy and ask about it. If you don't think this would work, just go to a dermatologist.
I wish you the best luck, and I hope I helped =) Let us know how this manage for you =)
