I have a number of family weddings coming up.
What do people do for formal occasions? I have
waist length hair, a hiarcut is not an option.
So i'm looking for something suitable to do with the hair;
i.e. Braids, double braids (i.e. Willie Nelson), updoos,
etc.
A bun...very formal and suits the occassion
Yeah, I'd go with the bun idea, or otherwise a half-tail braid.
What is a "half tail braid?"
this is it--just a braid using the hair from the top half of the back of the head.
Me at my cousin's wedding:

I'd just go with ponytail if I had waist length hair
I'd suggest either the bun or a herringbone braid, the instructions show it starting like a french braid but you can easily pull your hair back in a ponytail and start from there, looks really complex, but with a bit of practice they are easy, I can do them to my own hair no problem. http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/herringbone.htm for instructions
How about a segmented tail with multiple ties?
Absalom
Very nice. And perhaps a nice nave blue jacket would provide a delightful contrast
with the tail.
In fact, I am goint to a wake tomorrow and will be wearing my hair in a fashion similar to the one shown in the pic.
What I will be wearing: Navy blue jacket, blue seersucker shirt, off white slacks, tan suede shoes.
I guess I don't understand why anything different has to be done at all. If you normally wear it loose, then put on your tuxedo, suit and tie or whatever you plan to wear, and wear your hair loose. I think I'd put it all back so it hangs down my back and let it go. if you are comfortable with a tie, tie it back. i just thought of this--you could get one of those dressy looking silver clasp things and use it for a tie if it doesn't weigh too much. I think someone shows them in one of the long hair faqs linked to by this board.
Another website that has theses is tailcuff.com.
I think the half-tail braid that Randy mentioned sounds like a winner -- if it's what I'm thinking (a half tail with the main tail formed from the hair on the top of the head, then braided, with the hair from the lower head free-flowing below that).
I don't know how to do this myself. I had this done by a stylist.
Here's a better pic.
