I worked in my father's restaurant as an inventory clerk for eight years. I also doubled as a waiter when there were too many customers for the waiters to handle.
I was a full-time student last semester. I decided not to go to college this semester so I could work full-time to pay for my medical bills (which have been piling up).
And so I decided to apply in Walmart. This should be a no-brainer, I thought. With my experience, I'm sure that I will get hired.
My interview was last week. Walmart has not called me back yet. How long do they usually take to call back?
I believe that the reason why they didn't call back is because I have long hair, and I am overweight. My relatives keep telling me that I should cut my hair.
No way. That is not an option.
Is there anything I can do about this? I live in Moscow Mills, MO 63362. Is there a lawyer that I can contact about this, one who will work for free (I'm in debt, so I can't really pay)?
Do you know of any companies that do not discriminate against long-haired men?
I've seen really long hair guys work at Gamestop and borders. Also at starbucks the other day I saw a guy who worked there that had waist long dredlocks.
Most places I know up here in Toronto in the food business; Health Canada requires workers whether short or long hair, guys or gals to either wear caps/hair nets (in the kitchen). And if serving they require servers to wear a ponytail or in a bun. How I knew this is because I volunteer as a kitchen help in our local comunity centre for the homeless and anti-poverty program. Another tip, is when going for an interview, I would gel slick my hair into a ponytail--that gives it a more professional, tidier look. It's all in the attitude too and how you present/carry yourself. I wouldn't worry if I were you. In my opinion--I doubt it if it has anything to do with long hair or being overweight. Best wishes! Keep us all posted!
It wasn't for Wal-Mart, but a company once took THREE WEEKS to offer me a job.
I suppose the best thing to do is keep on looking, but don't write off the Wal-Mart job just yet.
In many locations Wal-Mart gets hundreds of application, and they are constantly coming in. There may be several reasons; they might have a waiting list of people they have interviewed and approved of that are to be offerred a job before you. The process may take a while (the bigger the company the more inefficient the process). And it's possible that the person over the hiring is a no-brainer also.
Don't rule it out, but don't stop looking elsewhere. In a competitive job market the more you apply the greater your chances. And call the person who interviewed you once a week to inquire. Sometimes if they find someone willing to follow up on a regular basis they will hire that person.
Keep at it. Perserverance solves a lot of problems.

One of my friends got stuck on a list. He applied for a job at a local supermarket early in the summer. Never heard a thing. Then late in August he gets a call from the store saying they wanted to hire him. Of course he could not work there as he was starting college the next week.
Walmart, whatever their faults, generally does hire long haired men. There may be some other reason. Possibly they think you are over-qualified? Many people don't like to hire college educated employees for menial jobs, because they are worried you will just leave and they will have to repeat the hiring process.
you have to call back.
i work there, thats what i had to do.
